African Kids Reach for the Stars With Help of US Astronomer

The beauty of space and the thrill of science have helped an American astronomer connect with children in Malawi, despite language and cultural barriers.

University of California, Riverside astronomer Gabriela Canalizo has spent seven consecutive summers teaching astronomy to kids ages five to 20 in an orphanage in the southeast African country. She brings a telescope and astronomy books, and she shows scientific videos of star clusters and galaxy collisions to the 220 children at Malawi's Passion Center for Children.

Canalizo hopes her visits encourage the children to stay in school, and to get excited about science.

"None of the orphanage's children and staff members had seen a telescope before I took one there," Canalizo said in a statement. "Still, they had excellent and imaginative questions.?For example, when I explained that stars eventually die, one child asked if the stars die because of disease. Some wanted to know how big the largest star is and how the moon got its craters. From the donated books, they have gotten to learn about Pluto and the other planets."

Canalizo has traveled with larger groups of volunteers from around the United States led by Pastor Eric Sythoff of the Crest Community Church in Riverside. Her first visit was in 2006.

Since then, the scientist has grown familiar with Malawi. She has learned some of the local language Chichewa, which is spoken in the region around the orphanage, and become accustomed to teaching in classrooms without desks and other basic school supplies.

"In the United States, we are much privileged in comparison, and are given much," Canalizo said.?"The trips to Malawi are an opportunity to share a little of our wealth of knowledge, our many and abundant resources.?I thoroughly enjoy working with the Malawian children. It's fascinating to see how eager they are to learn, to see how, with increasing knowledge, they have started to think about careers.?Already, four of the children I have worked with are in Malawian colleges now."

Malawi is home to about 16.3 million people. Roughly 11 percent of adults there have AIDS or HIV, which was the cause of 51,000 deaths in 2009, leading to a high population of orphans.

Canalizo said she formed many close relationships with the children at the Passion Center.

"They'll cry, 'Gaby! Gaby!' when they see me arriving at the orphanage," she said. "And every once in a while, some will call me 'Mom.'"

The most exciting SmartGlass application isn't what you'd think

In Microsoft's ongoing battle to alter your association between "Xbox" and "Video Games," SmartGlass is its latest volley. Employing your favorite mobile device -- Windows Phone 7.5/8, Android, and iOS devices are all supported -- SmartGlass enables you to control your Dashboard experience, explore the web, input text, and much more. But what Microsoft's really banking on is its "second screen" functionality, essentially enabling another layer of interactivity with video, music, games, and the Xbox 360's other, less ballyhooed service: sports.

It's this final layer that I found most enticing during a recent hands-on meeting with Microsoft. Could sports be the "killer app" that MS needs to get SmartGlass out of its tiny niche and into the hands of the masses? I think so.

Cautious Optimism For Real Estate from Agents: Redfin's Real-Time ...

October 23, 2012

Never content to sit around twiddling our thumbs, earlier this year we set out to supplement the broad real estate market insights we produce every month in our Real-Time Home Price Tracker and Real-Time Demand Pulse, adding even more depth with the introduction of our quarterly homebuyer survey, followed by our quarterly home seller survey. Now, to complete the trifecta, we are proud to introduce the inaugural Redfin Real-Time Agent Survey.

Real estate agents surveyed by Redfin:

  • See now as a good time to buy a home more often than a good time to sell one: 75% of agents surveyed described now as ?a good time to buy,? while only 54% described it as ?a good time to sell.?
  • Mostly expect price gains to be modest: Only 11% of agents expect home prices to ?rise a lot? in the next year. The vast majority?76%?expect prices to ?rise a little.?
  • Are feeling the pinch of low inventory and multiple offers: 90% of agents indicated that low inventory was one of the most common challenges facing buyers, and 91% pointed to multiple offers.
  • Are seeing both buyers and sellers gaining confidence in the market: 85% of agents agreed that buyers are becoming more confident about the market, and 84% agreed that sellers are becoming more confident.
  • Have hope for future of the real estate profession: 59% of agents believe that the real estate profession will grow in size in the next five years, 30% believe it will remain the same, and just 11% see more declines in the future.

The picture painted by the agents is one of cautious optimism. Most agents we surveyed expect modest price gains, improvements for buyers as well as sellers, and moderate growth in the real estate industry. The results line up nicely with recent gains in overall consumer confidence, which has been rising steadily through the year. No V-shaped recovery appears imminent, but rather a slow and steady trend back toward something resembling a normal market.

?That agents believe both buyers and sellers are becoming increasingly confident bodes well for sales volume in 2013,? said Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman. ?Over the past five years, eager sellers have been unable to find a buyer, or more commonly in 2012, eager buyers have been unable to find a seller. But going into 2013, we expect that a jittery market will settle down, and buyers and sellers will more easily come to terms. After years of irrational exuberance, crashes, foreclosure fire-sales, inventory shocks and saw-toothed trends, the cautious, broad-based optimism we?re seeing now is the best kind of recovery we could hope for.?

About the Survey

For one week in September (September 21 through 28, 2012), we surveyed 722 agents around the country, including 323 Redfin-employed agents and 399 Redfin partner agents.

Respondents spanned 19 metropolitan markets in the U.S.: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Riverside / San Bernardino, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC.

Data and charts are below. If you?d like the data segmented by market or by other customer demographics, please contact press (at) redfin (dot) com. If there are questions you?d like us to include in the survey next time, please just leave a comment below.

Better to Buy than Sell?

There?s a common perception that all real estate agents will always tell you that ?it?s a great time to buy? or ?it?s a great time to sell,? no matter what?s really happening in the market. Most agents we asked do indeed feel that now is a good time to buy (75%), likely thanks to prices hitting bottom in most markets across the country this year. For the same reason, only about half of the agents we surveyed (54%) feel that now is a good time to sell a home.

Modest Price Gains Expected

So with prices likely hitting bottom this year, are we in for another boom? Most agents don?t think so. The overwhelming majority (76%) expect prices to rise just a little in the coming year.

Agents Battling Low Inventory and Multiple Offers Alongside Buyers

We asked agents who work with homebuyers about the most common challenges they are facing in today?s market, and the response was overwhelming: Echoing what we have been hearing directly from buyers all year, over 90 percent of agents indicated low inventory or multiple offers as the biggest issues for buyers. Facing a market with many short sale and foreclosure listings (which often involve a much higher stress process to buy) and becoming fatigued from the discouraging process of repeatedly having promising homes slip through their fingers were the next-highest challenges with fewer than half as many responses.

Listing Agents Face a Mixed Bag of Challenges

On the flip side, agent responses about the most common challenges for sellers were more mixed. The only response chosen by a majority of agents was ?unrealistic expectations? at 53 percent. Although prices have been on the rise for most of the year, it seems that sellers may have a more optimistic view on pricing than most agents.

Confidence, Aggression on the Rise Among Buyers

Agents overwhelmingly agreed with statements that both buyers and sellers are getting more confident (85% and 84%, respectively), and an equally large number (85%) are seeing more aggressive offers from homebuyers as they respond to the difficult realities of today?s market.

Two thirds of agents agreed that sellers are ?frequently accepting all-cash offers, even for less than a financed offer.? This preference from sellers is likely related to another common issue we have heard: appraisals are frequently coming in below the contract price. Over half of agents (57%) agreed that this is an issue they have seen in their market.

A Rosy Future for the Real Estate Profession?

With the number of real estate agents having been shaved by the hundreds of thousands over the last few years, we asked agents whether they saw a turnaround for the industry now that the market is beginning to slowly rebound. Just over half of respondents (56%) expect a modest rise for the real estate agent profession over the next five years, while 30% expect things to remain roughly the same as they are now.

This week we will be sending out the latest Seller Survey, so stay tuned to these pages later this month for the latest look at how sellers feel about the market on the cusp of a winter with record-low inventory.

Friendship 2.0: Teens' technology use promotes sense of belonging, identity

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? With adolescents seemingly glued to cell phones and social networking websites, experts are investigating whether the near-constant digital activity changes youths' development.

A new study from the University of Washington shows that digital media helps teens reach developmental milestones, such as fostering a sense of belonging and sharing personal problems. But the study also raised questions about whether digital connectedness might hinder the development of an autonomous sense of self.

Katie Davis, an assistant professor in the Information School and an expert on digital media use during adolescence, calls it "Friendship 2.0."

"What they're doing is different from generations of teenagers from before the digital era, but it comes from the same place of basic developmental needs. It's just that they're using different tools to satisfy these needs," said Davis.

She is the author of a study on the role of digital media in adolescent friendships and sense of identity, an important factor in psychological well-being. The study will be published in the November issue of the Journal of Adolescence.

Davis interviewed 32 adolescents, aged 13 to 18 and about an even mix of boys and girls, living on the island of Bermuda where teens have similar digital media habits as teenagers in the United States. She asked them about how they use media to communicate with friends, and came up with an inventory of their media use:

  • 94 percent have cell phones.
  • 53 percent have Internet-enabled cell phones.
  • 91 percent have Facebook profiles.
  • 78 percent use online instant messaging, such as MSN, AOL or Skype.
  • 94 percent use YouTube.
  • 9 percent use Twitter.

These percentages are similar to what Davis found when she surveyed 2,079 youths living in Bermuda, an affluent British-dependent territory located about 640 miles off the coast of South Carolina. Though more Bermudian teens use social networking sites and own cell phones than American teens, Davis says that her findings from the island where she grew up and worked as a school teacher can provide insights on U.S. teens because the two countries share cultural ties and the role of digital media in teens' lives is similar in both places.

Davis asked about the content of their digital conversations and analyzed 200 examples shared by the teens. Casual chatter about homework or what they did that day occurred three times more than intimate conversations about feelings or problems.

Looking more closely at the casual exchanges, Davis found that friends stay connected through frequent check-ins, sharing something funny that happened or asking what they're up to or how they're doing. These off-the-cuff conversations can last throughout the day, with breaks for going to class or having dinner.

Most -- 68 percent -- of check-ins occur on Facebook, and include groups of friends commenting on photos or YouTube videos. Nearly half of the participants in the survey talked about posting photos of themselves with their friends and then tagging their friends, allowing them to discuss a shared experience and promote a sense of belonging to a circle of friends.

Intimate exchanges, discussed by 69 percent of participants -- usually girls -- included how they were feeling, whether they were having a bad day or other problems that they hoped to get their friends' help with. Youths, especially those describing themselves as shy or quiet, said that it was easier to share these personal thoughts digitally than in person. Some felt typing rather than speaking their feelings gave them more control.

Some participants considered the ability to connect anytime and anywhere with their friends to be not just convenient, but necessary to stay up-to-date and to avoid feeling isolated or being left out of group activities.

"Adolescents are interacting with their peers constantly, and the question arises as to whether they can still develop an autonomous sense of self," Davis said. This isn't known yet, but she suspects that this constant connectivity may support the development of an outward-looking self, one that looks to others for affirmation rather relying on an internal sense of worth and efficacy.

"Relying on others for self-affirmation suggests a relatively fragile sense of self, but our study doesn't say for sure that that is what is going on," Davis said. "What we can say is that adolescents are using digital media to promote their sense of belonging and self-disclosure of personal problems, two important peer processes that support identity development."

The study was funded in part by The Bank of Bermuda Foundation.

U.S. Election Uncertainty & European D?j? Vu ... - Financial Sense

The charts below clearly show that the Dow Transport and the Dow Industrial indices continue to exhibit divergent modalities. Since November 2009 the charts indicate that the Industrials have reached higher highs but the Transports have failed this test and have been range bound for nearly all of 2012. The direction and the momentum with which the Trannies break from this range will be most significant. I believe the market is awaiting with trepidation the results of the November presidential election. As we speak the polls are indicating that either candidate can win and this is bringing a fair degree of uncertainty into price action. The major concern is the position of Mr. Romney with regard to Iran given his predisposition to quickly consider war as a policy option. A new Middle Eastern conflagration is the last thing the world economy needs right now but unfortunately he has been boxed in by powerful interests. It is hard to see how he can march himself down the hill of imminent warfare, formal or covert, should the hand of destiny finally fall upon him.

The forward looking indications from Google, Microsoft, IBM, Intel, UPS and FedEx are negative. I think this is due to the contraction in world demand caused by European austerity. However the results from financials, banks, brokers and real estate are more positive. This is due to the low interest and quantitative easing policies being imposed by the FED. Short term earnings disappointments aside, should the issue of the war with Iran be taken off the table quickly and if American real estate and banks continue to gain strength then the scenario could be set for solid future American economic growth. Such a recovery would help Europe stabilise its sovereign debt problem and allow national economies to end austerity and invest again in expansion initiatives. This action would save the Euro from a catastrophic demise and allow another uncertainty to be cancelled from market calculation. Such a situation would consolidate the grounds for a sustainable US recovery over the next decade.

Thus I reckon a lot will be decided in the next few months, not least of which what type of administration will be entrusted to attempt to finally end the greatest structural recession since the great depression. The stakes could not be higher.

European d?j? vu:

Irish Times, Saturday 20th. October 2012:

"GERMAN CHANCELLOR Angela Merkel has upended a carefully crafted plan to resolve Europe?s banking crisis, delivering a sharp setback to Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Enda Kenny as he battles for a debt relief deal.

Moments after Mr. Kenny declared in Brussels that he had achieved solid progress overnight at a tense EU summit, Dr Merkel moved abruptly to curtail the scope of the effort to break the link between bank and sovereign debt.

The chancellor?s intervention, which took high-level EU figures by surprise, has cast a new cloud of uncertainty over the feasibility of Mr. Kenny?s demands.

For the first time in public, she backed her finance minister Wolfgang Sch?uble in his assertion that national bodies must remain responsible for most banking debts.

This is markedly at odds with the push from Mr. Kenny and the leaders of France, Italy and Spain for the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund to pay for historic banking losses".

As the above quote clearly indicates the Euro crisis is far from over. In fact all I see is a political civil war breaking out. In addition to the problems being experienced by Mr. Kenny David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, announced at his recent party conference that he wished to totally renegotiate the terms of Britain's membership of the European Union. Should he not get want he wants he has indicated that he may consider withdrawing Britain completely from Euroland. Such an outcome would be a disaster for Europe in general and Ireland in particular. Where England goes Ireland may be forced to follow given the close relationship between the Dublin Financial Services Centre and the City of London. What is at stake here is the future of the "City" itself. Frankfurt wants to be the pre-eminent financial centre in Europe. However London refuses to give up its pole position. This is why Cameron is against the imposition of greater banking regulation based in Europe and is totally opposed to the financial transaction tax proposed by the European Commission. London quite rightly fears that if it starts applying this imposition business will flee from the "City" to more liberal destinations like New York and Hong Kong.

"No job no money, no money no life:"

This statement made by a youth in Greece last week sums up the general frustration of young European graduates living not only in Athens but in Dublin, Madrid, Lisbon and Rome. Nearly 50% of youths under the age of 25 are unemployed in these capitals. For this abandoned generation the European Stability Mechanism offers no solution. This is because the central issue is not banking recapitalization and sovereign debt support but jobs and growth and hope. To achieve real growth Europe needs to become more competitive. It requires debt write off. It demands investment not draconian austerity. It needs real leadership.

For many observers the 500 billion Euro ESM is a diversion that is mis-guided and conceptually flawed. It will not achieve the objectives of banking recapitalization and sovereign debt stabilization for two main reasons. Firstly it is being partly funded by those countries needing funding, which is going to play havoc with its S & P ratings down the road. Secondly it is too small for the task at hand. The task will require in the region of 4-5 trillion Euro to adequately do the job, yet the federal courts in Germany have put a limit on Germany's contribution. This renders the fund's potentiality suspect from the get-go. Even though the ESM is inadequate and problematic all political energy is currently going into its gestation. There is no other political game in town even though national economies and concomitant institutions are collapsing due to rapidly falling money circulation. This situation cannot continue indefinitely without serious consequences. That which cannot continue, won't.

Currently, as we speak, the main fascist party in Greece "Golden Dawn" is growing at an alarming rate. This development is due to the fact that people are desperate for solutions to their social and economic problems. However, solutions are not forthcoming from mainstream political parties. This is worrying. Peter Drucker in his 1939 classic: "The End of Economic Man the Origins of Totalitarianism" spelt out the consequences of such failure. The end result was the horror of the Second World War. Unfortunately Angela Merkel is ignoring the lessons of history and is making the same mistakes again. I think Dr. Merkel will go down in history as the worst chancellor of Germany since you know who. To alter this perception she must strive to lead her nation in a new direction. She must help her people understand that Germany is the main beneficiary of the Euro currency in that it allows cheap German goods flood into France, Portugal Spain, Italy, England, Ireland, Poland, Russia and Turkey. Should the Euro fail, any new Deutschmark would be so over valued that German exports would quickly collapse, contracting its economy to the level of its austerity bound neighbours. Thus the type of political leadership desperately needed in Germany now is not the style that focuses on narrow national party politics but one that values a shared European vision for the future, a vision that is creative not destructive.? What is sorely needed now more than ever is statesmanship not political cunning. Let us hope that Dr. Merkel will have such an epiphany soon, very soon.

Canada blocks $5.2 billion Petronas bid for Progress Energy

TORONTO/KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Canada has blocked Malaysian state oil firm Petronas's C$5.17 billion ($5.2 billion) bid for gas producer Progress Energy Resources, throwing the country's energy sector into turmoil.

The surprise move could signal problems for Chinese oil group CNOOC's C$15.1 billion offer for oil producer Nexen and, longer term, weigh on other Canadian firms hoping for foreign investment to tap their vast energy reserves.

Also, any rejection of the CNOOC bid would likely damage trade ties Canada has been trying to build with China, and would underline political sensitivity to Chinese corporate expansion in North America.

The government, which has said C$630 billion investment is needed over the next decade, has been trying to balance concerns over the deals with a need for foreign investment.

Canada's announcement late on Friday, minutes before a deadline, was a blow to Petronas whose domestic oil supplies are shrinking and which has been seeking to boost its resources beyond Malaysia and volatile areas such as Sudan.

The bid for Progress had not been expected to run into hurdles in a review process that asks whether a deal is of "net benefit" to Canada.

Petronas, which said on Saturday it was not ready to comment, has 30 days to make its offer more palatable. It was not clear what it could put on the table.

"I have sent a notice letter to Petronas indicating that I am not satisfied that the proposed investment is likely to be of net benefit to Canada," industry minister Christian Paradis said in a statement.

The Petronas deal attracted scrutiny after CNOOC made its bid for Nexen. Some members of Canada's governing Conservative Party are wary of the CNOOC offer, in part because of what they say are unfair Chinese business practices.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said China's "very different" political and economic systems were a concern. A CNOOC spokeswoman in Beijing would not comment.

WARNING

Last month, China's ambassador to Canada said the government should not allow domestic politics to affect its decision on whether to approve CNOOC's bid.

South of Canada's border, Chinese firms have had difficulty doing business. The United States House of Representatives' Intelligence Committee issued a report earlier this month saying companies should stop doing business with Chinese groups Huawei and ZTE over security concerns.

On Thursday, the chief executive of U.S. aircraft maker Hawker Beechcraft, whose $1.79 billion sale to a Chinese firm fell through, said China-bashing by U.S. presidential candidates may have contributed to failure of the talks.

The United States has long been the largest market for Canadian energy exports. But with growing U.S. oil output from unconventional sources and the rejection this year of an initial application on the controversial Keystone XL pipeline project, Canada has been forced to try to build bridges with Asian markets that would welcome its energy supplies.

CNOOC, which has won approval from Nexen shareholders, has said it will retain all Nexen employees and make Calgary the headquarters for its Americas operations.

Petronas had also attempted to highlight the benefit its deal offered to Canada, saying it would combine its Canadian business with that of Progress and retain all staff.

"Maybe Canada is using this to attach more conditions to the Nexen deal," said Gordon Kwan, head of energy research at Mirae Asset Securities in Hong Kong. He thinks CNOOC will get the go-ahead.

Progress's share price had doubled since talk of the possible Petronas bid emerged in April, closing at C$21.65 on Friday. Nexen stock has also surged since CNOOC announced its bid in July, rising 48 percent to C$25.15.

Canada last blocked a foreign takeover in 2010, when it stunned markets by rejecting BHP Billiton's $39 billion bid for Potash Corp, the world's largest fertilizer maker.

BHP also had a 30-day period to come back with additional undertakings but withdrew its offer, sensing the bid was unlikely to be approved in the face of political opposition.

BIG DEALS?

Canada is grappling with concerns that approval of the deals could spark a flurry of takeovers of energy companies - the country is home to the world's third-largest proven oil reserves, most of them in the western province of Alberta.

Petronas, Malaysia's only Fortune 500 company, made a big push into Canada's shale gas sector last year when it bought a $1.1 billion stake in a field from Progress.

Petronas first bid for Progress in June to gain control of its 800,000 acres holdings in the Montney shale-gas region of northeastern British Columbia, reserves that could feed a planned liquefied natural gas facility on the Pacific coast.

It raised its initial offer of C$20.45 per share to C$22 in July after a rival bid from an unnamed suitor.

As its domestic supplies start to dwindle, Petronas has been expanding abroad, investing in Sudanese oil, South African petrol stations and European liquefied natural gas.

It had seen the Progress deal as a crucial step to increase its presence in a more stable country after clashes on the border between South Sudan and Sudan this year all but shut its pipelines there.

On Thursday, Canada's broadcast regulator blocked BCE's C$3 billion bid for Astral Media, saying the deal would give too much power to BCE, Canada's biggest telecoms company and the owner of numerous TV and radio assets.

Tips of Great Health | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

Athlete?s foot

Sprinkle baking soda on your feet and between your toes, or apply a paste made with one tablespoon of baking soda and lukewarm water. Wait 15 minutes, rinse, and dry your feet thoroughly.

Black Eyes and Bruises

Firstly, treat the injury for 15 minutes with an ice-pack wrapped in a towel, to constrict the blood vessels. Remove the ice pack for ten minutes to allow your skin to warm up, and then repeat the treatment. Switch to heat the next day to dilate blood vessels and improve circulation (a warm, wet facecloth will work). To get rid of the discoloration, eat a few pawpaws. An enzyme in the fruit makes it easier for the body to re-absorb the blood trapped under your skin.

Bloodshot Eyes

If your eyes itch, your problem is probably allergies. A cold facecloth held over closed eyes will shrink blood vessels and reduce redness. If you?re eyes don?t itch, the problem is fatigue or a head cold. A warm facecloth will help your eyes relax.

Blurry computer vision

Tape a piece of newspaper to the wall about two meters from your computer screen. Every 15 to 30 minutes, look at the newspaper and bring the headlines into focus. Then look at your monitor. Do this five times, and then get back to work.

Burn on the roof of your mouth

If you over-nuked your leftover pizza and scorched the roof of your mouth, use an over-the-counter cough lozenge with benzocaine to cut the pain. If you don?t have any try sugar.

Cold Sores

Hold a wet tea bag on the sore; the tannin from the tea acts as an astringent.

Shin Splints

Arch your toes back towards your body while gently rubbing your calf. Start behind the knee and slide your hand down the muscle to the heel, then repeat. Rub along the length of the muscle, not across it.

Frosty finger

Heat up your digits by immersing them in warm water. Avoid rubbing your fingers together; it may damage the skin.

Hangnails

Use manicure scissors to trim of any sharp, dried skin around the edge of the nail. Then rub petroleum jelly over and around the nail, and leave overnight. The jelly will trap moisture and soften the dry skin underneath.

Heartburn

Chew a stick of sugar free gum ? the increase saliva will help your stomach acid flow, and it will also coat and protect your esophagus.

Hoarseness

Your vocal chords need rest, so don?t speak ? or even whisper. To get rid of the frog in your throat, take five to ten minutes shower, drink warm herbal tea with a slice lemon, and avoid caffeine, smoke, alcohol, and large or fatty late-night meals.

Ingrown Toenails

Soak your foot in war water to soften the nail. Then roll a small piece of cotton to the thickness of a candle wick, soak it with iodine, and place it between the skin and the tip of your nail. Wrap the toe with gauze, tape it, and change the dressing daily until the nail grows out.

Sunburn

Take an oatmeal bath. Wrap a cupful of oatmeal in sheeting or cheesecloth and hang it from your tap, so that the bath water runs directly over it as the tub is filling. No one knows exactly how the oatmeal works to soothe the pain, but you will feel better.

Nosebleeds

Sit up, so that gravity will lower the vein pressure inside your nose. Tilt your head forward slightly to keep blood from running down your throat.

Poison Ivy

If you know you?ve touched the stuff, you have ten to 30 minutes to wash the area and prevent a skin reaction. Soap and water work fine.

Rashes

Rub a paste of crushed vitamin C tablets and water on your skin.

Sensitive teeth

To prevent pain, smear a dab of petroleum jelly over your gums before bed.

Sore feet

Pour a handful of hard, uncooked beans into your slippers and walk around a few minutes. The rolling beans create an instant message. Then hold your feet under the bath tap. Run the water on hot one minute, cold the next. Alternate for ten minutes, ending in a cold rinse. To prevent future pain, sp[read marbles on the floor and pick then up with your toes.

Sore throat

For mild sore throat, there?s nothing better than gargling with warm salt water. You can try an old Roman trick: blend tomato juice with two cloves of garlic and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Then drink it down.

Spicy food

To reduce the burn from a fajita, order a dish of rich ice cream, dip into the sour cream that?s already on the table, or send the waitress for a beer or margarita. Capsaicin, the substance that gives pepper their zing, dissolves readily in alcohol and fat. Rice and bread are also effective.

Splinters

Soak the area in warm water for up to 15 minutes. This makes the wood swell, which often causes the splinter to pop out on its own. If you want to pluck it with tweezers and you?re having trouble spotting the little nuisance, press a penlight to the sore spot. Light will pass through the skin and highlight the splinter?s angle and depth. If that doesn?t help, pour a thin layer of white glue over your finger. Let it dry, and then peel it of. The splinter will usually come off with the glue.

Lauding Obama, Clinton cites 'impatient' Americans

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton said Friday that President Barack Obama is facing a tough re-election race because "impatient" Americans haven't fully recognized an economy on the mend.

Campaigning for Obama in Green Bay, Wis., Clinton urged voters to stay the course as more signs of a recovery sink in. Clinton said voters should judge Obama on the past three years, in which private sector job growth has made up for lost ground.

"This shouldn't be a race," Clinton said. "The only reason it is, is because Americans are impatient on things not made before yesterday and they don't understand why the economy is not totally hunky-dory again."

The former president said Obama's difficulty in his race with Republican challenger Mitt Romney is that "people don't feel it yet" even as the unemployment rate ticks down and the manufacturing sector perks up. Clinton said Obama deserves credit for stabilizing a situation that saw the country hemorrhage jobs well into his first year.

"Gov. Romney acts like from the minute the president took his hand off the Bible he was responsible for every lost job," Clinton said.

Everywhere he goes, Romney argues that the tepid recovery is grounds for a change. The shape of the economy consistently tops lists of voter concerns.

A local police official said 2,200 turned out to hear Clinton at a college fieldhouse. Clinton won Wisconsin in both of his presidential campaigns.

Republicans think they can flip the state, which hasn't gone to them since 1984. Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan is on Romney's ticket and has campaigned heavily in the state in the past few months.

WhatsApp Messenger (for Android)

Are you still paying for text messaging? Hang onto your wallet. With countless apps offering free or low-cost unlimited text messaging across different operating systems, and even to international numbers, there's no need to spend real money on SMS.

The free-to-download Android app WhatsApp Messenger (free for one year, 99 cents per year thereafter) is the cross-platform instant messaging app people are using around the world, and an Editors' Choice in our book. And as is the case with any great social network, it's the people that make it stick. WhatsApp lets you send unlimited text-like messages to contacts anywhere, and lets you say goodbye to a sizable chunk of your paid texts.

On a global level, WhatsApp is perhaps the most popular of these applications, and a recent update keeps the experience fresh and fun. The company doesn't disclose user data, but according to Google, the Android app alone has been downloaded 1.2 million times from Google Play. Compare that to Skype (650,000 downloads) Viber (300,000 downloads) and Kik (100,000). Feature-wise, it doesn't do anything spectacularly different from its rivals, with its real value coming from its popularity. Furthermore the app is generally less buggy and more frictionless than the competing apps.

Replace Your SMS
For the uninitiated, WhatsApp is an instant messaging platform that interfaces like a smarter version of Android's stock SMS. It runs smoothly on 3G or Wi-Fi, and supports Android, iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone smartphones. WhatsApp has all the customization features you'd find in any other text messaging service, and then some. For instance, you can share your location on Google Maps, attach an image, video, audio clip, or contact to a message, insert a cute emoticon from a large palette of emoji, or change your conversation's wallpaper.

Like Apple iMessage and BlackBerry Messenger, WhatsApp also notifies you when a message has been received on the other side. Your recipient can't pull the "sorry for the late response, just read your text!" excuse like she can with SMS texting. But unlike iMessages, which can sync your conversations across the desktop app on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, you can't keep conversations alive from your computer with WhatsApp. On the other hand, iMessage doesn't work across non-iOS phones, the way WhatsApp does.

A welcome new feature lets you start a group chat for up to ten people, and title the conversation, like "Dan's birthday dinner." And you can leave the group anytime so you're not spammed by irrelevant alerts.? You won't find this in Google Talk.

One thing we'd like to do with WhatsApp that we can't now is add text to photo messages.? As it stands now, you have to send a photo, and then send a separate message, or vice versa. It can be very confusing for a recipient to see a photo without context.

Who's On WhatsApp?
Every WhatsApp Messenger account is tied to a single phone number. When you launch the app for the first time, WhatsApp automatically scans existing phone numbers in your address book and extracts the ones using WhatsApp, so you can begin messaging those people right away. And you might be pleasantly surprised by how many of your contacts already use WhatsApp, as we were. Attaching WhatsApp to a single phone number, rather than an email address, also helps minimize the problem of not being able to find contacts when you don't know which address they used to sign up.

If you can't find your friends, you can easily shoot them an invitation from within the app. A small, but helpful, additional feature is that it automatically adds new buddies when they join the platform?the app requires read/write permissions to your contact information, and it will run a scan every time you add a contact number.

Finally Encrypted
WhatsApp Messenger is based on an open source chat protocol, XMPP, the same one used by Apple iMessage and BlackBerry Messenger, and has been the target of a few successful hacks. For instance, last year security researchers were able to intercept and read WhatsApp messages by sniffing WhatsApp data over insecure Wi-Fi networks.

Fortunately, the current version encrypts your messages so that even if someone captures this data in transmission, he or she won't be able to read them.

If you have friends and family all over the world, WhatsApp Messenger is indispensible for its free, fast, unlimited messaging and slick interface. But if you're satisfied with your existing instant messaging services, like Google Talk, Skype, or Yahoo Messenger, WhatsApp doesn't offer much more in terms of features. It's really about the network of people who have already joined, and the group on WhatsApp is strong?and growing stronger every day.

How To Get Your Website Hosting Needs Accomplished ...

It can be somewhat difficult finding a reliable website hosting company. It can be hard to make the right decision with so many options available. Keep reading for some great advice on how to chose the web hosting service that will suit your online needs best.

TIP! Web hosting services may use Windows; however, some utilize Linux. This means you will have access to different features and have to get used to them.

If you want to draw more traffic with your site, choose a web host with a solid SEO feature. This feature can help your site get registered with the search engines. It may be better to register it yourself, however, since you can add detailed descriptions to help rank your site better.

Research multiple companies before making a final decision. Seeking out the advice of only a select few may leave you with an incomplete picture of a web host?s abilities. Furthermore, you risk being given information that is bought and paid for!

Hosting Company

Do not register your business domain name with the hosting company you choose, if you desire to own that domain long term. What you may not know is that you can lose your domain name if something happens to that web hosting company. Keep your domain registered with an independent registrar company to prevent any mishaps.

TIP! Discuss with your current web host about taking your domain name if you are considering making a change in hosts. If you can?t transfer the domain name, there?s little point to transferring the web hosting services, because you will lose your access to that domain name and have to use a different web address.

Make sure your web hosts has more than one connection to the Internet. A host with just one route to the Internet is a dangerous choice, because if their connection fails, your website will necessarily be down, as well. Make sure they?re redundant connections and make sure each has enough bandwidth for your site.

A cPanel can be beneficial, ask your web host if they provide it. This allows you to work with your email accounts, FTP access and other important parts of your website platform. The applications in a cPanel are simple to use as opposed to their SSH counterparts. In addition, you will increase the efficiency of your site by having cPanel available for your use.

TIP! Ask about any security the web host may provide. Websites are under attack regularly, and there are very many other threats, as well.

The features that hosting companies offer varies widely. When viewing various hosts, compare their level of service to the particular feature you need. For instance, one host can have a lower price advantage, but the feature you need may only be in a package that is higher priced.

You may not be satisfied with what a free web host has to offer. The price might look good, but the service may be inadequate for your future needs. Make sure your hosting provider allows your website to grow as needed. There may be high switching costs associated with new providers, which takes away from the value of a free hosting site.

TIP! Just because a web host company is free, does not mean you should rule it out entirely. Some free hosts will add their own banners to your site and make it look unprofessional; but search out those who do not.

Maintain a strong presence on a forum for hosting, to ensure you have proper knowledge concerning your hosting company. If multiple web hosts are down, you will know it?s not your particular host?s problem, and that the issue is being worked on. If it is your web host, and the outage is for a long period, keep up with the forums. Join in an effort to alert the company about it.

Disk Space

TIP! Look into what add-ons and additional features that the different hosts offer. When you are analyzing the different providers, compare the different levels of service so you know you are getting the right features you require.

Make sure that you know in advance your disk space and bandwidth requirements. This is based on the type of page you have, as well as the amount of traffic you are dealing with. Web hosting companies commonly pitch unlimited webspace and data transfer. If you have insufficient disk space or data transfer, your website will have lots of downtime.

As stated in the introduction, finding the right web page hosting company is not easy. With the multitudes of companies, features and other factors, the list of possibilities can seem endless. Make it easier by keeping the above tips in mind, and you?ll find the best web host for your site.
