Russian officials hassle Pussy Riot play director
MOSCOW (AP) ? A Swiss theater director said Monday that Russian immigration officials, Cossacks, and several police officers barged into a Moscow theater in a bungled attempt to stop his play re-enacting the trial of punk band Pussy Riot.
Milo Rau said the officials interrupted the play at the Sakharov Center on Sunday and demanded to check his documents. They were soon followed by a group of irate Cossacks ? people who claim to be descended from a once-feared Tsarist-era paramilitary group ? who said they were offended by the play, and by several police officers.
The raid quickly petered out, however, when it turned out Rau's visa was in order. The warrant they used also had a wrong address on it, Rau said.
"My impression was that they had absolutely no plan ? they just wanted to interrupt it and helplessly searched for a reason," Rau said Monday. "It was more Kafka than Stalin."
Russian news agencies on Sunday quoted senior officials from the Federal Migration Service as saying that the point of the raid was to warn Rau that he was not allowed to work in Russia on a business visa that he had. Officials, however, said that they were not planning to fine or prosecute the director.
Moscow police said in a statement late Sunday that police officers were at the Sakharov Center to ensure law and order but did not witness any disturbances.
Rau was directing a three-day reenactment of trials against Russian artists, including Pussy Riot, who staged an impromptu anti-Putin protest in Moscow's main cathedral last year.
Three band members were sentenced to two years in prison for "hooliganism." Their trial, which drew worldwide outrage and widespread condemnation from rights groups, did not allow their defense to call most of its witnesses and included medieval Orthodox Christian liturgical texts as evidence.
Yekaterina Samutsevich, a band member who was later released on appeal, participated in Sunday's re-enactment. A court on Monday rejected a plea of another band member, Maria Alekhina, who was appealing a January court decision which turned down her application to defer her sentence until her preschool-age son becomes a teenager.

Contraception in women over 40
Mar. 4, 2013 ? Despite declining fertility, women over age 40 still require effective contraception if they wish to avoid pregnancy. A review article outlines the risks and benefits of various contraceptive options for these women. The article, based on current evidence and published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal), is aimed at helping physicians find the best methods for their patients.
The benefits of use outweigh the risks for most contraceptive methods used by women over 40. Even for women with risk factors for complications, methods are available that can be safely used to prevent unintended pregnancy. Several methods are considered "top-tier" by the World Health Organization, including copper IUDs, progestin implants and sterilization.
Contraceptives containing estrogen should be used with caution in women over 40 who have cardiovascular risk factors, because of the increased risk of blood clots. Although some patients are concerned about an increased risk of cancer, studies have not shown a negative link between oral contraceptive use and cancer. Use of oral contraceptives is associated with a reduced risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer.
In addition to preventing pregnancy, oral contraceptives can have some additional noncontraceptive benefits for women over age 40 years, such as alleviating heavy menstrual bleeding and diminishing hot flashes in perimenopausal women.
Condoms and diaphragms may also be effective, because failure rates are lower among older women than among younger women.
"Clinical judgment will be required to balance the risks and benefits when a woman has multiple medical conditions," writes Dr. Rebecca Allen, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Women and Infants Hospital, Providence, Rhode Island, US. "The availability of safe, effective options suggests that estrogen-containing methods should increasingly be used with caution in older women who have cardiovascular risk factors."

Apple's Lightning to HDMI adapter opened up, discovered to contain a tiny AirPlay computer
The fine folks at Panic were experimenting with video out from iOS -- never we mind why -- and came across an interesting discovery: Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter, aka HDMI adapter, doesn't seem to pass along a 1080p signal in the traditional manner. Instead, it looks like it's passing along upscaled AirPlay-like video. Intrigued as to how, Cabel Sasser gutted the adapter like a Tauntaun on a cold night to find out, and shared what he discovered on the Panic Blog:
Your eyes don?t deceive you ? that tiny chip says ARM. And the H9TKNNN2GD part number on there points towards RAM ? 2Gb worth.
So it's a tiny computer. More specifically, a tiny, single purpose, hard-lined Apple TV-esque device. That explains the less-than-stellar quality of the output, but not why Apple chose to go this way.
