American Tyler Hamilton, a former teammate of Armstrong?s who also won the cycling gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, told 60 Minutes, in a segment that aired Sunday night, that he personally saw Armstrong inject performance-enhancing drugs, including a synthetic version of the hormone EPO, during the 1999 Tour de France and in the run-up to both the 2000 and 2001 Tours de France. Beyond that, Hamilton suggested U.S. Postal Service Racing officials helped supply cyclists with drugs, as well as advise them on how to beat international tests.

Armstrong?s defense for years has been that he is the most tested athlete in sports history and that he has passed every one of them, hundreds over the last 20 years. However, Hamilton said Armstrong personally told him that a positive drug test at the 2001 Tour de Suisse was covered up. Disgraced rider Floyd Landis, another former teammate of Armstrong?s, has also made the same claim in the past. (Armstrong insists there has been no coverup.)

Normally, the sources of these are French tabloids or zealous international doping officials or disgraced former champions. That these supposed revelations are now coming from the well-respected, usually reticent Marblehead, Massachusetts, native could signal one of the final blows in Armstrong?s enduring legacy.

Barring some incredible admission from Armstrong himself, the last straw may come from federal grand jury testimony given by cyclist George Hincapie, a teammate of Armstrong?s on all seven Tour de France-winning teams. The show 60 Minutes said that Hincapie has testified that he and Armstrong both used EPO and ?discussed having used testosterone, another banned substance, during their preparation for races.?

Rather than issue a flat-out denial, Hincapie took to his Twitter account to address the 60 Minutes report. ?I can confirm to you I never spoke with ?60 Minutes.? I have no idea where they got their information,? he tweeted on Friday. ?As I?ve said in the past, I continue to be disappointed that people are talking about the past in cycling instead of the future.

?As for the substance of anything in the ?60 Minutes? story, I cannot comment on anything relating to the ongoing investigation.?

With these accusations following a months-long investigation into 2010 Tour de France winner Alberto Contador and whether his ingestion of a tainted filet mignon triggered a failed drug test (he was ultimately cleared of wrongdoing), professional cycling may be on the verge of a tipping point: The code of silence among elite riders may mean less than it ever has and the moral imperative to clean up the sport may finally trump all other considerations.

I forget where I heard about Bringing Light to Shadow (subtitled "A Dog Trainer's Diary), by Pamela S. Dennison. ?Perhaps in a review of Control Unleashed or a similar dog training book of its ilk, that uses positive methods. ?It was an interesting book to read, because it was quite literally Dennison's diary as she brought Shadow (registered name of Dennison's choosing "Ewe Are Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt") home from rescue, discovered he was human aggressive and had a bushel of problems, and then dealt with them. ?Using a clicker and treats and other non-corrective positive methods.

One reason this book is unique is that, other than I'm sure some copyediting, Dennison hasn't cleaned the story up at all. ?She got Shadow. ?Shadow behaved aggressively towards her dogs and towards people, and would do so without warning. ?She did her best to identify all of Shadow's stressors, set up a rewards schedule, and got to it. ?It took her 18 months of hard work (and I mean hard work. ?She's a professional dog trainer, so that helps the story immensely, but this lady had something on schedule for Shadow nearly every day), and Shadow got his Canine Good Citizen, and has since moved on to hold Rally Obedience titles, and is working in agility, etc. ?

Things fascinating to read about were the steps taken to break potentially "triggering" experiences down into manageable pieces, which could be stopped at any point, to slowly expose Shadow to. ?Distance and barriers (fences, baby gates, etc.) were used to manage the Random People Factor when Dennison worked with Shadow, in all manner of situations. ?She took care to teach Shadow "those people over there aren't to be worried about" in a wide variety of contexts, so that he could generalize it to "those people over there aren't to be worried about" all of the time, versus "when we're in a parking lot, those people over there aren't to be worried about." ?Dennison also discussed Shadow's body language a great deal, particularly his mouth, eyes, and ears. ?It was really a delight to read the first few entries, when she realized she had a problem on her hands, and then read the closing entries, when she was rejoicing in how he was pretty much a normal dog.

As with every book, though, there were aspects of it that I disliked. ?I can't fault Dennison on the technicality of her training; she is a professional dog trainer, I just play one at home and on the Internet. ?I certainly applaud her for taking the time to work with Shadow, rather than returning him to the rescue or having him euthanized. ?But when her solution to Shadow fighting with her other dogs, Beau and Cody, was to ignore them, and in five minutes or so, they stop, I was a little hesitant to be on board with this. ?Early in the book, if fighting stared, she would yell "Stop", and feel instantly guilty for yelling, which I can understand. ?I discussed in Would You Like Some Cheese with That Whine??that yelling was not the way to go in Elka's whining situation, because yelling just reinforced that there was something to whine about. ?But this is a different situation entirely; dogs fighting can hurt and even kill one another, even Border Collies, who seem to be one of those benign breeds. ?It is of note that yelling "Stop" in fact immediately stopped the fighting, and towards the end of the book, none of the fighting started in the first place, but that just seemed weird to me. ?

The other aspect I disliked was in fact how much Shadow was scheduled up. ?Private lessons, out in the field work, herding lessons, class with other aggressive dogs class...it was a lot. ?Not every day, but three or more times a week, it seemed. ?I in fact wondered when Dennison's other dogs got time with her, as that wasn't really mentioned all that much. ?I can't contradict the good work that was obviously done with Shadow, as his success is certainly measurable in his titles and public workability, but I can't help but wonder if some of this scheduled-up pressure wasn't so great for him, or for Dennison; she was first to admit that it was frequently her own nervousness that might have made him nervous, in some situations. ?

Overall, though, it was a good book. ?Informational, not too terribly nuts and bolts for those uninterested, though not narrative enough for the casual reader (i.e., not interested in dog training) to thoroughly enjoy. ?Dennison explains things well, and obviously accomplished a lot with Shadow, with praise and a flat collar and a clicker and treats, which I think is amazing. ?

Edward James Olmos Joins 'Dexter'

Edward James Olmos, best known for playing William Adama in Syfy?s Battlestar Galactica, has joined the cast of Showtime?s Dexter.

The Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor will play a brilliant, charismatic professor of religious studies.

Olmos joins recently announced guest stars Colin Hanks and Mos, formerly Mos Def, in the new season.

Production on the sixth season of Dexter begins Wednesday in Los Angeles and will launch on Showtime this fall.

In addition to Battlestar Galactica, Olmos has starred in Miami Vice, Stand and Deliver, Selena, Blade Runner and the theater and film versions of?Zoot Suit.

Today marks the 101st birthday of one of the greatest children?s book creators of the twentieth century, Margaret Wise Brown. Although she died suddenly of an embolism at the age of forty-two, Brown wrote more than one hundred books, including Runaway Bunny and her classic Goodnight Moon. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Brown grew up on Long Island and attended the Dana Hall School and Hollins College, where she was encouraged to write. The teacher-training program of Bank Street in New York would change her life.

Flourishing under the mentorship of Lucy Sprague Mitchell, founder of Bank Street, Brown began to study early childhood development and write stories for very young children. Mitchell believed that children under the age of six wanted stories that reflected the reality of their own lives. Brown embraced Mitchell?s ideals and crafted individual works of genius for babies, toddlers, and preliterate children.

For a period of time, Brown became an editor for William R. Scott, publishing books like Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina, Gertrude Stein?s The World is Round, and her own titles such as The Noisy Book. Eventually, with the publication of The Runaway Bunny in 1942, Brown began to write full time, penning one classic after another?The Color Kittens (1949), a Golden Book that deals with color theory, The Little Island (1946) [under the pseudonym of Golden MacDonald], and Mister Dog (1952).

Today Brown is best remembered for a book that took almost twenty years to establish itself as a classic, Goodnight Moon. Upon awakening one morning in 1945, she wrote down the entire text of the book, telephoned her editor, Ursula Nordstrom, and read the text. Nordstrom accepted it immediately for publication. In a melodic, rhythmic text a young bunny says goodnight to all the objects in the room.

Brown waited for Clement Hurd to return from the Pacific, where he was fighting in World War II, to work his illustration magic. She had loved his art for Runaway Bunny. But when she saw the first draft of the art, Brown hated it. Hurd portrayed an old white grandmother sitting in the chair, with a young black boy in bed. Brown insisted the story had always been about bunnies, and she wanted bunnies! Nordstrom backed her.

The resulting book seemed a bit unexciting and overpriced for most customers. Critics found it sentimental. However, in the end children established it as a classic. A few months ago, I read Goodnight Moon, over and over and over, to my two-year-old grandniece Ella Silvey. She had no intention of going to sleep; she just wanted to hear the text one more time. As I kept rereading, I once again realized what a pleasure it is to say these words aloud. A timeless book, almost like a child?s evening prayers, Goodnight Moon has lulled millions of children to sleep over the decades.

So happy 101th birthday Margaret Wise Brown. You taught us, and still teach us, how to communicate to the youngest children. Although you had only a decade to devote yourself to writing, in that short time you truly made a difference in the lives of children everywhere.

Book Review - My Top Three Brazilian Books

I'm sorry this is late coming.?As promised, I would like to end our Brazilian Week talking about books. (Of course! Did you really thing it would be something else?:-) There are many fantastic writers in Brazil and it is hard to short list them, however, sometimes you read books that will just not sit on your shelf quietly.?One of them was actually already reviewed here (to read the review click here). "Sabado a Noite" (Saturday Night) by Babi Dewet is a fab book and I stayed up untill 5am reading it because I just could not put it down. If you can read?Portuguese, it is?most definitely worth checking her blog as well. A Beatles and McFly fan, Babi is a seriously cool chick with her fingers on the pulse of all the good things happening in Rio's cultural scene.Another favourite is "Sete Faces do Amor" (The Seven Facets of Love) by?Pedro Bandeira, Luiz Maria Veiga, Jesse Navarro e M?rcia Melo, J?lio Em?lo Braz Viviana de Assis Viana, Fernando Portela e Edson Gabriel Garcia -?a collection of seven short stories put together in an anthology. Each story looks at a different type of love:?all-consuming, platonic, romantic, and possessive, the love of a friend, the love that betrays and the one that is on your life for a short period of time for a reason. The best thing I can tell you about this book is that I read it quite a few years ago as part of the list I had to read for my Literature classes. I very rarely found on that list books that I liked, but this was lovely and over a decade later I still remember it.The third book is actually a collection of books (sorry, I know I am cheating, but I just could not pick just the one!) - a series called "Plenos Pecados" (Simply Sins - click here for more information) by seven different authors, some of which are not actually Brazilian. Each book focuses in one of the Seven Deadly Sins and the intention is to not only read about them but also make you feel them. My favourites are the books on the sins of: Anger ("Xadrez, Trucos e Outras Guerras" - Chess, Cards and Other Wars - by Jose Roberto Torero), Lust ("A Casa dos Budas Ditosos" - The House of Happy Buddhas - by Joao Ubaldo Ribeiro) and Envy ("Mal Secreto" - Secret Evil - by Zuenir Ventura). I didn't really enjoy the book on the sin of Sloth, but hey! That was the only one I did not enjoy out of the entire series, which is not bad.?Definitely?worth reading. A quick tip: Take deep breaths at the end of the Anger book and try not to burn it or scream at your walls. Get the cold shower running while you read the book on Lust, you will need it. Seriously. And get ready to bite your nails to the quick while reading the one on Envy.?So there you are!
