Out of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the country, San Antonio ranked 33rd in the American College of Sports Medicine?s American Fitness Index data report.
Not an impressive showing. But there?s an upside: the city?s rank rose from 43rd place in 2010.
The report evaluated figures related to healthy lifestyles and physical activity to?determine the?fittest places?in the U.S. Preventative health behaviors,?levels of chronic disease, access to health care and community resources and policies that support physical activity were all taken into account.
The San Antonio?metropolitan area scored?45 out of 100 possible points in 2011. The city ranked 18th on personal health indicators related to health behaviors, chronic health problems and health care, but 50th on ?community/environmental indicators related to the built environment, recreational facilities, park-related expenditures, physical education requirements and primary health care providers,? according to a news release.

Minneapolis-St. Paul ranked first with a score of 77.2. Elsewhere in Texas, Austin ranked 17th, Dallas ranked 39th and Houston ranked 42nd.
