NestPix ? CA Energy Efficiency Standards

Rounding out Home Improvement Month, the California Energy Commission released updated energy efficiency standards required for all new construction, started on or after January 1, 2014. The new standards increase efficiency by 25 percent for residential construction and 30 percent for commercial construction.

The new requirements for home construction include solar ready roofs (the ability to add solar panels in the future), efficient windows, whole house fans and insulated hot water pipes. Commercial construction standards include high performance windows, lighting controls that adjust to available daylight and building occupancy levels, and cool roof technology (materials that deflect sunlight).

The Energy Commission anticipates that the new standards with will increase the cost of construction by over $2250 but will result in an estimated savings of over $6000 over 30 years.
