Katy Perry has never shied away from opening up about her religious upbringing. And in a vintage interview featured in her July 5 3-D movie, "Katy Perry: Part of Me," the singer is taking fans back in time as she sits with her parents and they all discuss her then-budding provocative image.

In the teaser clip for the film, which premiered during the pre-show for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 3), a fresh-faced Katy seems annoyed by her mother's criticisms and fears that with more fame, there might be fewer clothes.

"I don't watch it," her mom, Mary Hudson (Katy's real last name is Hudson), says when asked what she does when her daughter is on MTV.

Perry doesn't seem too pleased with her answer. Visibly upset, she says, "You don't watch me, Mom?"

However, dad Keith tries to defend her. "Oh, you would [watch her], Mary." But she seems pretty insistent that she won't, adding, "Katy, I'm not gonna watch you if you've got half your clothes off."

Right after, a montage of images of the scantily clad pop star flashes across the screen. When her dad said, "She ain't gonna have half her clothes off, relax," he had no idea where Perry's desire to be a pop star would take her.

Of course, Perry would eventually embrace barely there looks, including bikini tops that spew whipped cream and appearing in little more than a bra and undies in her videos. But before she became the Katy fans know and love today, she grew up in Santa Barbara with her pastor parents.

Now fans are taken back nine years. In another old interview, an 18-year-old Katy candidly dishes about wanting to break free from her conservative parents' point-of-view. "I feel like I was never allowed to even think for myself and I always said my heart wants to do all kinds of things," she tells the camera. "I want to travel and experience other things outside my comfort zone. I guess I'm probably just going through a rebel phase. I don't know."

"Katy Perry: Part of Me" opens July 5, just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.
