Charlize Theron Teases Kristen Stewart 'Showdown'

'I'm just really, really, really hoping I get to kill her,' the 'Snow White and the Huntsman' star jokes to MTV News.

Ever since the trailer arrived for Kristen Stewart's next likely blockbuster, "Snow White and the Huntsman" -- a.k.a. her first big post-"Twilight" movie -- we've been chomping at the bit for more info about the film.

Luckily, MTV News had a fun-filled chat recently with Stewart's "Huntsman" co-star Charlize Theron, during which the South African-born beauty revealed that she and Stewart are about to shoot the film's climactic battle sequence.

"I'm still shooting ['Huntsman'], I'm going back in two days," Theron told us as she promoted the comedy "Young Adult." "I haven't really worked with [Kristen]. I've done some small things with her, but we're about to shoot our big showdown, and fingers crossed for me. It's the big battle. I'm just really, really, really hoping I get to kill her," she said with a smile. "That is how the story ends up, right?"

While the Rupert Sanders-directed flick is a new adaptation of the classic fairy tale, somehow we don't think Theron will get her wish. Maybe her Evil Queen will wound Stewart's Snow White in some way, but death doesn't seem too likely.

For her part, Stewart has had nothing but praise to heap on the film -- so much so that she's open to the idea of doing more than one movie as the fairest one of all.

"Oh, man, to be totally candid and honest with you, when I first signed on to this thing, the idea of doing another franchise was like, 'Wow, [we'll] cross that bridge when it comes.' It was something so far outside my realm of thinking," Stewart told us recently. "I was so focused on the first one, and I thought, 'Maybe, maybe,' but I've got stars in my eyes. I'm literally over the moon about what I'm doing right now," she said of her work on "Huntsman." "Yes, I would love to [do more 'Snow White' films]."

Check out everything we've got on "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Italy's Monti in austerity race as IMF role eyed (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Prime Minister Mario Monti faces a testing week seeking to shore up Italy's strained public finances, with an IMF mission expected in Rome and market pressure building to a point where outside help may be needed to stem a full-scale debt emergency.

Monti is expected to unveil measures on December 5 that could include a revamped housing tax, a rise in sales tax and accelerated increases in the pension age. But pressure from the markets could force him to act more quickly.

One source with knowledge of the matter said contacts between the International Monetary Fund and Rome had intensified in recent days as concern has grown that German opposition to an expanded role for the European Central Bank could leave Italy without a financial backstop if one were needed.

The source said it was unclear what form of support could be offered, such as a traditional standby arrangement or a precautionary credit line, if a market selloff Monday forced immediate action.

The IMF inspection team is expected to visit Rome in the coming days but no date has been announced.

An unsourced report in Italian daily La Stampa said up to 600 billion euros could be made available at a rate of between 4-5 percent to give Italy breathing space for 18 months.

Such a sum would be beyond the IMF's current capacity and would need new measures such as the issue of new special drawing rights (SDRs) or intervention by the ECB, it said.

The Fund's total lending capacity is currently around $400 billion.

The IMF declined to comment on any moves to provide financial support, and official sources in Rome said they were unaware of any request for assistance from Italy, which has over 185 billion euros of bonds falling due between December and the end of April.

Italy's borrowing costs have returned to the dangerous levels that triggered the collapse of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's center-right government, with yields on 10 year bonds ending last week at more than 7.3 percent.

Italian yields are now in the territory that forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek international bailouts and an auction Tuesday of up to 8 billion euros of BTP bonds will be a crucial test.

Friday, Italy paid a euro lifetime high yield of 6.5 percent to sell new six-month paper, a level which analysts said cannot be maintained for long without pushing a public debt amounting to 120 percent of gross domestic product out of control.

Italy, the euro zone's third biggest economy, would be far too big for existing bailout mechanisms and default on its 1.8 trillion euro debt would cause a banking and financial crisis that would probably destroy the single currency.

Monti outlined the broad thrust of his reform plans earlier this month, promising a mix of budget rigour and reforms to stimulate economic growth, and has stuck to Berlusconi's pledge to balance the budget by 2013.

But with growing signs that Italy's chronically sluggish economy could be entering recession, he has come under pressure to provide concrete details quickly.

PRESSURE

The measures outlined so far are broadly in line with directions previously given by the ECB, but there have been no detailed discussions with international bodies on the kinds of conditions normally attached to IMF assistance programs.

As well as loosening job protection measures, privatising local services and opening up professions to more competition, additional budget measures estimated by Italian media at up to 15 billion euros could be announced.

Monti can take some comfort from surveys showing broad popular support for his technocrat government, but austerity measures have yet to bite deeply and surveys also show a mixed picture on individual austerity measures.

On pensions, the government is expected to bring forward an already-planned increase in retirement ages, with a wider reform possible in the coming weeks.

Monti may reintroduce a housing tax that was scrapped by Berlusconi in a last-minute campaign pledge before the 2008 election. The move cost the Treasury an estimated 3.5 billion euros a year.

Other ideas under consideration include raising the value-added tax band in bars and restaurants, which currently stands at 10 percent.

26 bodies dumped in mass slaying in Guadalajara (AP)

GUADALAJARA, Mexico ? The bound and gagged bodies of 26 men were found dumped before dawn Thursday in the heart of the picturesque city of Guadalajara, a sign that full-scale war between drug cartels may have come to the metropolis that hosted last month's Pan American Games.

Law-enforcement officials said the men were found, shot execution-style, in two vans and a pickup truck abandoned near the Milennium Arches, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Mexico's second-largest city.

Best known as the home of mariachi music and tequila, Guadalajara also sits on the main highway running through western Mexico from the methamphetamine-producing state of Michoacan north toward the Pacific Coast state of Sinaloa. In recent months, security officials and analysts have worried that the city could become a target for the Zetas drug cartel, which has been using paramilitary-style tactics and headline-grabbing atrocities in a national push to grab territory from older organized crime groups.

"These acts of barbarism show how the war between cartels, and crime, is getting more brutal," Guadalajara's mayor, Jorge Aristoteles Sandoval, told reporters.

A message was found with the bodies in one of the vehicles, said Luis Carlos Najera, public security secretary for the state of Jalisco. He provided no details, but Mexican cartels frequently leave threatening messages with the bodies of their victims as a way of sowing fear and taking credit for their actions.

"It's sad to see what's going on," taxi driver Jesus Amado said. "We used to be looking at the problem from afar. Now we're not, we've got it right here."

Officials initially reported that there were 23 bodies found. Ulises Enrique Camacho, a spokesman for the attorney-general's office, said Thursday afternoon that the toll had risen to 26.

The bodies were found about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the Expo Guadalajara events center, the site of both Pan Am Games events and the Guadalajara International Book Fair, which opens Saturday and describes itself as the world's most important Spanish-language book fair. The fair's website said it was expecting more than 600,000 visitors from around the world.

Crime in this colonial city of some 1.5 million people was historically dominated by the powerful Sinaloa cartel, but the group's tight grip was shattered by the death of its regional commander, Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel, in a shootout with federal police in July 2010.

Guadalajara's murder rate then soared as factions of the cartel known as the New Generation and the Resistance battled to control Coronel's territory and assets. Street battles have left hundreds dead in the city and surrounding areas.

Killing slowed to a trickle during the Oct. 15-30 Pan American Games, which brought a massive influx of police and soldiers. Law-enforcement officials and analysts said they were nonetheless concerned that a Zetas onslaught could be imminent.

Thursday's slaying bears the hallmarks of the Zetas, perhaps working in concert with the Resistance, said Samuel Logan, director of Southern Pulse, a risk-analysis firm specializing in Latin American organized crime.

If the Zetas turn out to be responsible, the Guadalajara attack may be part of a sustained offensive against Sinaloa, he said.

On Wednesday, 17 bodies were found burned in two pickup trucks in a strikingly similar attack in Sinaloa, the home state of the eponymous cartel. Twelve of the bodies were in the back of one truck, some of them handcuffed and wearing bulletproof vests.

"I think the location is significant, that points in the direction of the Zetas," Logan said, although he cautioned that another cartel may well turn out to be have been responsible. "Maybe the Zetas pushing into Guadalajara creates the next major battlefront ... If it was the Zetas, they're going to continue pushing."

Responding to a reporter's question, Najera told the Televisa television network that he believed the recent calm in Guadalajara was the result of an increase in security and not because drug cartels had struck a truce with each other during the games.

He declined to comment on the possible motives for the slayings, saying only that investigators had "various hypotheses."

Most Britons oppose children having mobile phones, poll finds (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Nearly three-quarters of Britons think it is inappropriate for children under 12 to own a mobile phone, despite the fact that most kids already have them, according to a poll on Thursday.

The survey of 2,000 people found that expensive bills, unmonitored internet use and lack of parental control were some of the reasons adults felt uncomfortable about kids owning mobiles.

However, more than one in 10 would buy a child a mobile phone as a treat to encourage good behavior, or for doing well at school.

The vast majority of parents (90 percent) also liked the idea of a child having a phone in case of an emergency.

Mobile phone information and price comparison website Recombu.com, which carried out the survey, noted that 79 percent of 7 to 11-year-olds already own a mobile.

Hannah Bouckley, editor of Recombu, said: "It is reassuring for parents to be in constant contact with their children, but there are clearly concerns about just how careful a young child will be with their own mobile phone.

"It is important for parents to sit down with their kids to discuss the responsibilities that come with the phone and set clear limits for its usage from the outset."

Economy gets mixed batch of news ahead of holidays

(AP) ? At the start of the critical holiday shopping season, the economy received a dose of mixed news Wednesday.

Consumers barely increased their spending in October, and businesses pulled back on investment in long-lasting manufactured goods. Still, Americans' pay rose by the most in seven months, a sign they may spend more in coming weeks.

Some economists were discouraged by the reports, especially after a separate report earlier this month showed Americans spent more on retail goods in October for the fifth straight month.

Paul Dales, a senior U.S. economist with Capital Economics, said the slower consumer spending growth and decline in business investment suggest economic growth in the October-December quarter could be weaker than first thought. He now expects just 2.5 percent growth, instead of 3 percent.

Consumer spending increased 0.1 percent last month, the Commerce Department said. It was the poorest gain in four months.

Yet people continued to spend more on cars and electronics, analysts noted. Spending on longer-lasting goods rose a solid 0.8 percent. Part of that reflected the introduction of the Apple iPhone 4S last month.

People cut back on non-durable purchases, such as clothing and food. And spending on services, which represent two-thirds of consumer spending, barely grew. That led many analysts to speculate that consumers might be giving up vacations and eating out less because of the weak economy.

"Today's report was a good reminder that much of what consumers spend their money is not purchased at the shopping mall, but is rather spent on their homes and on their health," said James Marple, senior economist at TD Economics. "With services spending making up 65 percent of total consumption expenditures, the poor performance here more than made up for the continued gains in spending on goods."

Perhaps the best news in the report was that Americans earned more in October after five straight months of paltry pay increases. Income rose 0.4 percent last month, the best showing since March. Private wages and salaries drove the gain.

And when subtracting taxes and adjusting for inflation, income rose 0.3 percent in October.

Many Americans chose to save the extra money. The savings rate ticked up to 3.5 percent of after-tax incomes from 3.3 percent in September ? the lowest level since December 2007, the month the recession started.

Some economists had predicted consumer spending would slow because Americans spent more over the summer while earning less. Consumer spending is important because it makes up 70 percent of economic activity.

Another concern: businesses cut orders for durable goods in October, the Commerce Department said in a separate report. The 0.7 percent decline was largely because of a big drop in volatile commercial aircraft orders.

Still, spending on so-called core capital goods, which are considered a good proxy for business investment plans, dropped by the most since January. That followed two straight months of gains.

Durable goods are products expected to last at least three years. Orders tend to fluctuate sharply from month to month.

A third report showed the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose slightly last week to a seasonally adjusted 393,000 after two months of steady declines.

The four-week average of applications, which smooths week-to-week fluctuations, fell to its lowest level since April, the Labor Department said. The downward trend suggests companies are laying off fewer workers.

The economy grew at a rate of 2 percent in the July-September quarter. The modest growth is not nearly enough to lower the unemployment rate, which has been stuck near 9 percent for more than two years.

Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors, said it was possible that the weak consumer spending last month could be temporary, given that the trend in service spending had been more positive in recent months.

Naroff said spending should rebound to support economic growth of roughly 3.5 percent in the final three months of the year.

Many Americans could take home less next year if Congress doesn't extend a Social Security tax cut and emergency unemployment benefits. Both expire at the end of this year.

The Social Security tax cut gave most Americans an extra $1,000 to $2,000 this year. If long-term unemployment benefits expire, roughly 6 million families could lose an average of $300 per week. For some, that's their only source of income.

Both changes would leave Americans with an estimated $165 billion less to spend. The Federal Reserve expects the economy to grow only 2.7 percent next year, and economists say the expiration of the two programs could reduce growth by a full percentage point.

Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday Follow-Up Due Early 2012

'Nicki's back in the studio, so we're looking to drop Nicki in the first quarter,' Cash Money boss Birdman says.

The countdown is on, Barbz. Nicki Minaj's Cash Money boss Birdman is dishing on when the fierce female MC plans to drop her follow-up to Pink Friday.

"Nicki's back in the studio, so we're looking to drop Nicki in the first quarter," Brian "Birdman" Williams said in an interview with Billboard.com. He went on to dish that Minaj could potentially drop new music sometime before year-end. "Maybe this year? I don't know," he added about releasing a single before 2012 strikes. "We're really thinking it out. But she's in the studio, and we're looking real soon, because she's ready to go and we're ready to go with her."

Earlier this month, BET reported that Minaj posted a blog post about how her alter-ego Roman would play a part in her new music. Although the post was later removed, the MC teased that Roman is out for revenge.

"Roman will be in rare form this time. You know why? Cuz he no longer gives a f---," she wrote. "He has two more weeks in boarding school. We're going to pick him up now. When he lands, he will address the nation in the form of music. He will also announce the date."

Over the summer, Roman was the topic of discussion when Minaj teased her new LP. "I don't think I'm hitting up anybody for features for this sophomore album," she told us. "Roman ... possibly. But I never give away all my secrets."

Whether or not Roman will have anything to do with this record, Minaj's Pink Friday producer Kane Beatz recently told MTV News, "We got one so far. She's in L.A. goin' crazy. ... She just started, so she's really picking her music and picking the songs. She's real selective. She'll pick all the beats before she even starts writing, so right now, we're just getting music together, and it's goin' crazy right now."

Rights group: Syrian troops kill kids near school

Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad killed 23 civilians and five army deserters on Tuesday in a crackdown on an eight-month uprising against Assad's rule, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Among those killed were four children shot dead by troops near a school in the central region of Houla and a 12-year-old killed at a protest in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor, said the group, which is led by exiled dissident Rami Abdelrahman.

Four deserters were killed when troops stormed a farm where they were hiding near the southern city of Deraa on the Jordan border. The troops also shot dead six villagers at the farm.

A fifth deserter was killed in Qusair near the Lebanese border, the group said.

It was not possible to confirm the killings independently. The authorities, who blame the unrest on "armed terrorist groups," have barred most independent media.

A YouTube video purportedly showed one of the children, Abdelqader Maher Arslan, lying on the floor of a house in Houla with a bullet wound to the back of his head surrounded by members of his family.

Local activists said an armoured column entered the region overnight and troops erected roadblocks after a funeral for an activist turned into an anti-Assad protest. They added that tanks fired heavy machineguns and troops manning the roadblocks opened fire at random in the morning.

Four people were killed in raids on residential districts, including a disabled man in the neighborhood of Khalidiya, and firing from roadblocks in the provincial capital of Homs, 22 km (12 miles) southeast of Houla, the Observatory said.

Anti-Assad rallies were held during the evening in the district, together with protests in Bab Dreib, Bab Sbaa and al-Waar neighborhoods, activists said.

The Observatory said the other killings occurred in the northwestern province of Idlib near the border with Turkey, where two construction workers were killed by tank machinegun fire, and in the province of Hama, where protests have been growing since an assault three months ago.

Activists in Damascus said security police arrested 40 people in the capital's northeastern suburb of Harasta, adding to several hundreds of people who have been detained since an attack by deserters last week on a police complex in the suburb. In Brussels, the European Union urged the Syrian opposition on Tuesday to work closely with the Arab League towards democratic transition and said anti-government groups needed an "inclusive" political platform.

EU talks with opposition group
The EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton held talks with the Syrian National Council (SNC) as part of intensifying European contacts with opposition groups.

"She welcomed the ongoing efforts by the Syrian opposition to establish a united platform and to work for a shared vision for the future of Syria and the transition to a democratic system," Ashton's spokesman, Michael Mann, said.

"She also highlighted the importance of an inclusive opposition political platform taking in all religious and ethnic communities," he said.

The EU has not yet recognized the council or any other Syrian opposition group as representative of anti-government groups contesting the rule of al-Assad.

Young and restless: Demographics fuel Mideast protests

EU diplomats have argued opposition in Syria was too fragmented and lacked the clear political platform that allowed them to engage more closely this year with Libyan rebels who eventually toppled Moammar Gadhafi. There were also concerns about participation of Islamists groups in the opposition.

But EU governments have imposed extensive sanctions such as an oil embargo to put financial pressure on Assad to halt a violent crackdown on protests and give up power. The United Nations says 3,500 people have been killed since the protests erupted in March.

Further EU measures are likely to be formally approved at the next meeting of EU foreign ministers on Dec. 1.

The Arab League has also put pressure on Assad and its deadline for him to pull the military out of urban centres, free political prisoners and start a dialogue under the 22-member group's initiative to end the bloodshed in Syria expired at the weekend.

But Assad said in an interview published on Sunday he would not bow to international pressure to stop the crackdown.

"The High Representative encouraged the SNC to continue to engage with the Arab League to support its efforts towards a successful transition," her spokesman said.

Browns edge Jaguars 14-10

Joshua Cribbs, Ashton Youboty

By TOM WITHERS

updated 4:40 p.m. ET Nov. 20, 2011

CLEVELAND - Down to the final snap again, the Cleveland Browns finally got the ball to bounce their way.

Jacksonville rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert's pass into the end zone on the last play was incomplete, allowing the Browns to escape with a 14-10 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.

Gabbert rifled a 3-yard pass high over the middle that went off wide receiver Mike Thomas' outstretched hands, and the Browns (4-6) celebrated a win they nearly gave away. Last week, the Browns lost 13-12 to the St. Louis Rams when they botched a snap and kicker Phil Dawson missed a 22-yard field goal.

This one nearly ended under similar circumstances.

Browns quarterback Colt McCoy shook off an apparent shoulder injury and threw a 3-yard TD pass to Josh Cribbs in the fourth quarter to give Cleveland a 14-10 lead. But Dawson missed a 38-yarder with 2:49 left to give the Jaguars (3-7) a final chance and Gabbert, who had some good and bad moments, nearly pulled off the comeback.

Chris Ogbonnaya rushed for 115 yards and scored on a 1-yard run for Cleveland, ending a TD drought at home that lasted more than 158 minutes. The Browns had scoring drives of 87 and 85 yards, rarities in their first season under coach Pat Shurmur.

The Browns appeared in control when Dawson sent his kick toward the goal post. However, the officials standing directly under the uprights ruled it was wide and sailed over the top of the right post. Dawson argued that his kick should have counted but referee Terry McAulay announced the attempt could not be reviewed.

Gabbert then drove the Jaguars down the field and Jacksonville caught a break when Browns cornerback Joe Haden was called for interference in the final minute on third down.

Maurice Jones-Drew was stopped twice inside the 5, and the Browns were fortunate when Gabbert's pass on 2nd-and-goal went off wide receiver Jason Hill's chest in the back corner of the end zone. That set up a dramatic finale, and this one went Cleveland's way, giving the Browns a much-needed win before the schedule gets rougher.

McCoy completed 17 of 24 passes for 199 yards. And while his numbers were efficient, the second-year QB again showed he's a gamer by staying in despite being rocked on a sack in the third quarter.

Gabbert was 22 of 41 for 210 yards, and Jones-Drew rushed for 87 yards on 21 carries.

Josh Scobee kicked a 42-yard field goal to bring the Jaguars within 14-10 with 5:39 left.

Cleveland briefly took a 10-7 lead in the third on Dawson's 40-yard field goal, one play after McCoy appeared to injure his right shoulder when he was sacked by two Jaguars. However, Jacksonville's Mike Lockley was flagged for "leaping," giving the Browns an automatic first down at the Jaguars' 11.

McCoy got the Browns to the 6, but he forced a pass over the middle that was intercepted by safety Dawan Landry. McCoy helped tackle on the play, and Cleveland's quarterback slowly walked to the bench, where he was surrounded by team medical and security personnel, who formed a wall around him.

The Browns finally found their way into the end zone in the second quarter, when Ogbonnaya's first career TD, a 1-yard run off the left side tied it 7-7 with 3:21 left before halftime.

It was Cleveland's first touchdown at home since Oct. 2, a drought of 158 minutes, 15 seconds ? or 2 hours, 38 minutes and 15 seconds, nearly the length of time it takes to play an entire NFL game.

Ogbonnaya's TD was set up by McCoy's 51-yard pass to Jordan Norwood, who juked out safety Chris Prosinski after making his catch near mid-field.

Jones-Drew powered up the middle for a 6-yard TD run, capping Jacksonville's 18-play, 92-yard scoring drive that devoured 9:32 off the clock. Jones-Drew dragged safety Mike Adams and linebacker Chris Gocong into the end zone and followed with a celebration designed to irk Cleveland fans by imitating the powder toss NBA superstar LeBron James started while he played for the Cavaliers.

1. Where did you start in finance and what experiences led you to the job you have today?

Out of college, I started as a public accounting auditor at Arthur Andersen in Seattle in the mid-'80s. It wasn't too long that I knew I didn't want to stay around for partner, but it was an excellent training ground, since you "parachuted" into different companies every month or so and had to come up to speed on their business and accounting systems very quickly to be effective. A lot of people treated it like it was an MBA, without getting the formal educational distinction.

From there, I started working for early to middle-stage technology companies and found that I really liked that type of environment. You have a chance to set the rules and procedures and it's very dynamic. It is essential to venture out across business groups, within the company, to be an effective financial executive. You have a real good opportunity to have a large impact on the business. Sesame Communications fits the prototype of businesses I've worked for or sought out, so that's why I'm here.

2. Who was an influential boss for you and what lessons did they teach you about management and leadership?

There have been a number of people who have influenced me, but I must say that my first job out of public accounting and its CEO has had the most impact on my career to date, since I've been using those teachings the longest. I went to work for this country's first PC-based voicemail manufacturer in 1990, and two weeks later, a turnaround specialist, Dick LaPorte, took over as CEO. It wasn't long before we downsized from 110 to 65 people and he established very aggressive technology development and other key strategic and operational goals. Far more was being asked of the team in the coming 12 months than it had delivered in the past two years -- with much less people. Then, we went out and delivered. He had a great way of making the goals clear and establishing enthusiasm across the company to get the job done. The company went from an unprofitable $10 million a year company to a highly profitable $50 million a year company, with a successful IPO in four years.

The basic formula was: bring in a strong management team; set aggressive, but achievable goals; hold people accountable; build momentum (or "wins") from incremental progress; reward the personnel when they deliver; and stick to "the plan." It's easy to abandon a plan in a very dynamic environment, but it is absolutely critical to stay the course if you've done a solid job on the strategy.

Our new CEO, Diana Friedman, I think believes in this formula as well, and we're already seeing great positive changes at Sesame within a year of her taking over.

3. What are the biggest challenges facing CFOs today?

Before 2008, the financial markets were relatively consistent. Sure, you had your stock-market volatility, but the rest of the financial system and infrastructure was somewhat predictable. The rules were set on how to achieve financial success and how to leverage the system to help achieve that success. In the last couple years, a lot has changed. The same rules don't apply. CFOs have to be very creative and resourceful to ensure the enterprises for which they work remain viable operating entities.

4. What is a good day at work like for you?

I think everyone likes to "win." A good day for me is getting one of those wins. Usually that means something I've done or supported has turned out to be very successful -- we developed the right plan or solution, executed well and we are reaping the rewards. A good day for me can come from any win across my team or the company. Again, we all like to win and at the end of the day, we are all on the same team at Sesame, so the victories should be shared.

5. How would you characterize your management style?

I believe that people perform best when they feel they have the freedom to add their own creativity and style to the approach they take to their work. No one likes to be stifled or feel like someone is constantly watching their every move. If you, as a manager or leader, do a good job of setting clear goals, offering some guidance from your own experience, and setting up clear checkpoints to ensure we're on the path to success, I feel you'll get the right outcomes and your direct reports will feel that they made a positive impact on the company. Employees have to enjoy what they are doing to have sustainable, strong performance.

6. What strengths/qualities do you look for in job candidates?

I'm biased toward former team sport athletes. It may be a clich?, but companies really do act like teams. You are competing against other companies (or time), and you have to work together well to be successful. Of course, any prolonged experience working on a team (e.g., a band or committee, etcetera) could substitute for team sports. I also put a heavy emphasis on references before I've extended an offer to join our company. Of course, a candidate will provide names of people likely to give a positive reference, but I focus more on flushing out views on the qualities or experiences that will be essential to navigating the work environment we will provide -- not how they performed (overall) in their previous jobs.

7. What are some of your favorite interview questions or techniques to elicit information to determine whether a candidate will be successful at your company? And what sort of answers send up red flags for you and make you think a job candidate wouldn't be a good fit?

I often include the following questions in interviews: "How would co-workers describe you?" and "How do your friends describe you?" It forces the candidate to view themselves through other people's eyes and it's always interesting to see if those answers are different or consistent.

In terms of "red flags," I'm really looking for the kind of answers that would indicate that they won't be a team player or won't be willing to "roll up their sleeves," since early- to middle-stage companies often require an individual to work long hours and venture outside their stated job description.

8. What is it about your current job, at this particular company, that sets it apart from other chief finance positions?

I would say that I am probably more involved in the ongoing evolution of our business model, compared with other companies I've worked at. Sesame has been in business since the year 2000, but only recently has brought in a team of seasoned executives in to run it. As a result, any changes that we make generally require more thought and strategy -- relative to the business model -- since the ongoing processes and approaches are more "entrenched" due to the long history, and you have to factor that in when effecting change.

9. What do you do to unwind from a hectic day?

Spending time with my family gives me great joy, so anything that involves them is a perfect way to unwind. This sometimes includes coaching them in baseball or basketball. It's a great way to keep "perspective" on life, as you see the excitement and thrills that young kids have interacting with each other and improving their athletic and team-building skills.

10. If you weren't doing this job, what would you would be doing?

I have a common refrain -- "should have been a rock star..." If I didn't care about making a living or raising a family, then I'd probably be a musician or volunteering full-time for some organization. However, since family is so important to me, I'm more than happy to have my current job and profession.

Ex-military leaders bash candidates before debate

(AP) ? Three former top military officials slammed the Republican presidential field ahead of Tuesday night's GOP debate on foreign policy. The Democratic-leaning former officials said the entire Republican field has been all over the map but focused on GOP front-runner Mitt Romney.

"My concern would be that he might not be credibly decisive," Richard Danzig, who served as Navy secretary under President Bill Clinton, said of Romney on Monday. "There's too much of a track record here of moving between positions."

Danzig said President Barack Obama has shown the required decisiveness throughout his presidency.

Danzig, retired Gen. Wesley Clark and retired Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton critiqued the Republican field at a news conference organized by the Democratic National Committee.

Without naming Romney, Clark swiped at the former Massachusetts governor for comments downplaying the importance of capturing or killing Osama Bin Laden.

"One candidate said of Osama bin Laden, 'It's not worth moving heaven and earth and spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person,'" Clark said, referring to Romney. "But like all of us, he cheered his demise."

Andrea Saul, a Romney spokeswoman, responded by assailing Obama's foreign policy but did not directly respond to the officials' criticism of Romney.

"President Obama's feckless foreign policy has emboldened our adversaries, weakened our allies, and threatens to break faith with our military," she said.

Hands On With The Wimm One Data Device

scaledwm.IMG_4177We first talked about the Wimm One in August, noting that no wearable device has ever made sense to me, at least in watch format. I believe I may need to eat my words. The Wimm is a clever little module - the watch band is removable - that runs simple applets. It runs a stripped down version of Android and includes a fairly complete SDK for programming little widgets. In this incarnation, it includes a stopwatch, worldtime clock, and a few other treats. The watch drops into transflexive LCD mode when it needs to conserve power.

iPads top kids holiday wish lists

Nielsen

By Athima Chansanchai

Parents who have let their kids play with their iPad now get to reap what they've sown: a recent Nielsen study reveals that nearly half of those kids (44 percent) want an iPad within the next six months, up from 31 percent last year. And right behind it are the iPod Touch (30 percent) and iPhone (27 percent).?

Among consumers 13 and older, the iPad also held the top spot, but it was a much smaller percentage of respondents expressing their desire for one (24 percent), up from 18 percent in 2010. For teens and adults, computers and e-readers followed at 18 percent.

For the kid set, computers, non-iPad tablets and Nintendo 3DS also figured heavily in their minds, with each coming in at 25 percent. Other video game consoles, smartphones and TVs also claiming spots on their wanna-have list.

(You can see the full breakdown in the illustration above.)

Other recent surveys show that the iPad 2 is the most-wanted device of the season, with 65 percent of Sodahead voters putting it at the top of their wish lists. Our own informal survey in that story showed 39 percent of the 632 who voted also wanted an iPad 2 for Christmas, followed by 10 percent for a Kindle Fire.

In an image from video provided by NBC News, Dennis Davern appears on NBC's "Today" show via video on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. Davern, captain of the yacht Splendour, which actress Natalie Wood was aboard on the night she died in 1981, said during the interview Friday that he lied to investigators about Wood's mysterious death 30 years ago and blames her husband at the time, Robert Wagner, for her drowning in the ocean off Southern California. A Los Angeles County sheriff's detective Lt. John Corina said Friday that Robert Wagner is not a suspect in the death of his wife, and that new information is substantial enough to take another look at the case. (AP Photo/NBC News)

(AP) ? Natalie Wood's drowning death nearly 30 years ago came after a night of dinner, drinking and arguments but the question remains ? was it anything more than a tragic accident?

Conflicting versions of what happened on the yacht shared by Wood, her actor-husband Robert Wagner and their friend, actor Christopher Walken, have contributed to the mystery of how the actress died on Thanksgiving weekend in 1981.

Two sheriff's detectives are now diving into the mysterious events on the yacht Splendour, although whether they reach any different conclusions than their predecessors remains to be seen. They recently received new, seemingly credible information and heard from potential witnesses who weren't included in the original investigation of Wood's death, sheriff's Lt. John Corina said Friday.

But he said nothing has happened to change the official view that Wood's death was originally an accidental drowning. Wagner, the star of "Hart to Hart" is not considered a suspect, he added.

Corina released few details about who investigators have contacted or plan to re-interview, but the inquiry will certainly lead them to speak with the three survivors of the trip ? Wagner, Walken and skipper Dennis Davern.

Wood's sister, Lana, was not on the boat, but told CNN's Piers Morgan on Friday that she has spoken with Davern many times and believes her sister did not fall off the boat.

"I don't think she fell, I don't know if she was pushed, I don't know whether there was an altercation and it happened accidentally but she shouldn't have died and that does stay with me and hurt," Lana Wood said.

"I would prefer to always believe that RJ (Wagner) would never do anything to hurt Natalie and that he loved her dearly, which he did, and I don't believe that whatever went on was deliberate. I've always cared about him. I always will care about him," she said.

The captain said on NBC's "Today" on Friday that Wagner is to blame for the Oscar-nominated actress' death in the chilly waters of Southern California in November 1981, but didn't offer many specifics. For years he has maintained that he heard the famous couple arguing on the boat before Wood went missing and Wagner refusing to immediately search the waters nearby for his wife.

Davern's account is dramatically different from what he told investigators after Wood's body was found in 1981, when no mention of an argument between the couple was made. Wood was wearing a nightgown, wool socks and red down coat when she was found floating off Santa Catalina Island.

The renewed investigation comes at a time when plenty of attention was sure to be focused on Wood, whose beauty and acting in films such as "West Side Story" and "Rebel Without a Cause" made her Hollywood royalty. Her death stunned the world and CBS' "48 Hours Mystery" has been looking into the case for a special airing on Saturday.

Sheriff's officials denied the renewed attention prompted their review, which could take months.

"We're not concerned with the anniversary date," Corina said. "It may have jarred some other people's memories."

Davern and Wagner agree on one point about the fateful night ? there was a heated argument on the yacht after the group returned from dinner on Catalina. All had been drinking, and here is where the three men's accounts begin to differ.

Davern said he heard Wagner and Wood arguing and its outcome had horrific consequences.

Was that fight "what ultimately led to her death?" Davern was asked by "Today" show host David Gregory.

"Yes," Davern replied.

"How so?"

"Like I said, that's going to be up to the investigators to decide," Davern responded after a long pause.

Wagner acknowledges a fight took place on the Splendour, but in his best-selling 2008 memoir "Pieces of My Heart," he wrote that the fighting was between him and Walken. The disagreement began over the acting profession and led to Wood retreating to her cabin, while the dispute raged on between Wagner and Walken. Later Walken went to bed, according to Wagner, who, after staying up with Davern for a while, went looking for his wife and couldn't find her on board. He then noticed that a dinghy attached to the boat ?and his wife ? was gone.

Walken, who has rarely spoken about the events that led to Wood's death, denied in a 1982 interview on "Good Morning America" that he and Wagner quarreled.

"No, that's not true," Walken said when asked if a fight was the reason Wood left the yacht. "They were very good to me, that family, and that's not true.

"We were having a Thanksgiving weekend, a good time," he said.

But Walken told sheriff's detectives that there was an argument, according to a 2000 Vanity Fair piece that included statements from a report by the investigating detective. It also included comments from Davern, who told the magazine that he heard Wagner and Wood fighting before she went missing.

The detective, Wagner and Walken and coroner's officials all have maintained that Wood's death was an accident, possibly caused by her trying to secure the dinghy to the side of the yacht.

"The people who are convinced that there was something more to it than what came out in the investigation will never be satisfied with the truth," Walken was quoted in the Vanity Fair piece as saying during an interview in the 1980s. "Because the truth is, there is nothing more to it. It was an accident."

Wagner too addressed the uncertainty about what happened in his book.

"Nobody knows," he wrote. "There are only two possibilities; either she was trying to get away from the argument, or she was trying to tie the dinghy. But the bottom line is that nobody knows exactly what happened."

Wagner said through a spokesman that his family trusts the sheriff's department to conduct a fair investigation into Wood's death.

The couple were married twice, first in 1957 before divorcing six years later. They remarried in 1972.

Official: Dems reject latest GOP deficit offer (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A congressional official says Democrats on the deficit-cutting supercommittee have rejected a last-ditch offer from the Republicans that would curb deficits by $545 billion over the next decade.

The latest development raised serious doubts about the 12-member bipartisan panel reaching an agreement by Wednesday's deadline.

Democrats called it a "halfway" proposal and said it was unbalanced because it included just $3 billion in tax revenue.

The panel's mandate is to produce a plan to cut deficits by at least $1.2 trillion over 10 years. If they fail, it would trigger automatic, across-the-board cuts to the Pentagon and a wide variety of domestic programs.

The congressional official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

Android Market refund window apparently expands to 48 hours (update: Or not?)

Android Market

Update: We're being told by one developer that actually this wording is unchanged, and the 15-minute window still applies, it's just that Google has that long to refund the money. We're seeking clarification from Google, and watching our hope wane.

Google caused a fairly big stink nearly a year ago when it changed the window to uninstall and refund a purchased application to just 15 minutes -- a far cry shorter than 24-hour window we'd previously enjoyed.

But according to a new version of the developer distribution agreement being pushed out today, that window has been expanded, and expanded to a full two days. Here's the line from Section 3.4:

Products that cannot be previewed by the buyer (such as applications): You authorize Google to give the buyer a full refund of the Product price if the buyer requests the refund within 48 hours after purchase.

Good on Google for changing this one. While we don't want anyone abusing the refunds process, 15 minutes was absolutely too short a time to try out an application.

By the way, if you're a developer, make sure you log in to your developer portal to accept the new agreement. Wouldn't want your app yanked unnecessarily.

Thanks, Joe and Nick!
