But during a two-year daily regimen of the shots, close to three quarters of osteoporosis patients fail to take the drug as often as they are supposed to. High noncompliance makes this condition an especially compelling target for an automatic drug-dosing system.
"In a silent disease like osteoporosis, [patients] don't feel any difference, and they just give up the injections all together," says Robert Farra, co-author of the study and chief operating officer at MicroCHIPS, the company that makes the chip. Doctors can either preprogram the new device for a release schedule or send release instructions directly to it via a dedicated radio frequency.
For the study, eight postmenopausal women with osteoporosis had the chip?which is about three by five centimeters and can be implanted during an office visit?inserted under the skin around their bellies for about three and a half months. Daily doses of teriparatide were preprogrammed to release for about 20 days during the middle of the trial. Seven of the eight received most of their doses right on schedule, and each of these said they would opt in for another chip?most reported that they had forgotten that it was there.
Microchips like these could also be used for other conditions that demand discrete drug dosing, such as multiple sclerosis, for which some patients must inject a dose of interferon once every two days. Therapies that use hormones are particularly appealing for adaptation to microchip delivery because the body usually releases hormones intermittently?just as the chip does, Farra says. In the future, a device like this might also be able to help diabetics both monitor and treat their condition.
This sort of direct communication in an implanted device could help patients stick to medication regimes without having to face a syringe or pill bottle.
Remote controlled
The device can be preprogrammed or controlled wirelessly via the Medical Implant Communication Services (MICS) band, set aside for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by the Federal Communications Commission. And the device can also report back dose-delivery data to a computer-based system.
Scientists demonstrated that this sort of wirelessly controlled drug delivery might be possible in 1999. Some major technological hurdles needed to be cleared in the interim, Farra says.
The first challenge was figuring out how to create seals on the drug-holding wells that would stand up to moisture inside the body. Researchers solved this by using compression welding to create a hermetic seal around the well's metallic membrane. The second hurdle was figuring out how best to open those tight seals. The scientists settled on an electrical current that would melt the membrane on command. The final hurdle involved scaling things down?getting all the components and wells onto a chip that would fit comfortably under the skin.

Police in a small Massachusetts town are asking the FBI for assistance after photos of at least 17 high school girls turned up on pornographic websites, Boston's 7 News reports.
For the most part, the girls are fully clothed in the photos which were reportedly taken from Facebook and other social networks. However, the images, repurposed on pornographic sites, are augmented with sexually suggestive headlines and captions, and interspersed with photos of semi-clothed and nude women.
Parents and guardians of the students, who all attend Bay Path Regional Technical High School in Charlton, received letters from the Charlton police notifying them of the ongoing investigation, news of which seemed to spread among students before law enforcement was notified.
"My friend called me and told me that I was on the website, and I was in shock because I kept checking it every day to see if I wasn't," one 18-year-old student told 7?News. "Being on that website and being on a child porn website just makes me look bad as a person."
Exploiting innocent photos of children and teens is both questionably legal and an ongoing practice online. Popular social news site Reddit recently banned such content after years of allowing users to post photos of minors scrapped from social networks in forums with such titles as /r/jailbait, /r/preteen_girls, /r/jailbaitarchive,/r/ truejailbait, /r/GirlsinSchoolUniforms.
Parents should both understand technology and monitor the personal information, photos and other content their sons and daughters post online, Charlton Police Chief James Pervier told 7 News. Workers compensation losses contribute to Hartford's 61% drop in ...
HARTFORD, Conn.?Workers compensation loss costs contributed to a 61% drop in net income and an increased combined ratio last year for The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., the insurer said Tuesday.
The Hartford reported net income of $662 million for 2011, down from $1.68 billion in 2010. Written premiums for the Hartford, Conn.-based insurer reached $6.18 billion last year, up 7% from $5.8 billion in 2010.
The company reported a combined ratio of 104.5% for 2011, compared to 89.7% in 2010. Total revenues declined to $21.86 billion last year, compared with $22 billion a year ago.
The Hartford said a firming insurance market boosted its written premiums. The company saw a 5% increase in renewal pricing for its standard commercial lines last year.
However, The Hartford attributed its decreased earnings in part to reserve fund strengthening costs, including $161 million in workers comp reserve costs during the fourth quarter. That?s compared to a reserve release of $52 million for all other property/casualty lines during the fourth quarter, the company said.
?Evaluating our strategy?
?Capital markets volatility, low interest rates and higher-than-normal cat and noncat weather challenged the industry and The Hartford in 2011,? President and CEO Liam E. McGee said in a statement. ?Even in this environment, The Hartford is a much stronger and more efficient organization, with a significantly enhanced financial position and risk profile. As we said in December at our Investor Day, we are evaluating our strategy and business portfolio for opportunities to deliver greater value for shareholders.?
For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, The Hartford reported net income of $127 million. That?s down 79% from $619 million during the fourth quarter of 2010.
Written premiums for the recent quarter were $1.48 billion, up 2% from $1.45 billion for the fourth quarter of 2010.

Big media buy back shares with cable TV cash (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? Big U.S. media companies bought back record amounts of their own shares in the last year, with cash generated by cable television networks that drew strong viewership and advertising dollars despite the economic uncertainty.
News Corp was the latest media conglomerate to top Wall Street's profit forecasts after the market closed on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Time Warner Inc posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, following a robust report from Walt Disney Co on Tuesday. Viacom Inc, despite a ratings discrepancy that hurt its Nickelodeon network, also managed to beat expectations last week.
While media conglomerates are famous for having dealmaking mogul owners like Rupert Murdoch and Sumner Redstone, the maturity of these businesses combined with the after-effects of a long recession have brought a new shareholder-friendly stance.
"It's consistent with one of the big themes for this year in media: the focus is on returning cash to shareholders. I don't think acquisitions are on the radar right now," said Standard & Poor's analyst Tuna Amobi.
News Corp, still reeling from the phone-hacking scandal in Britain, has bought just over 6 percent of its free float back since July, and executives reiterated their ambition to complete their $5 billion buyback by June 30.
Time Warner spent nearly $5.6 billion, returning cash to shareholders through buybacks and dividends last year. On Wednesday the company, which owns HBO and CNN, raised its quarterly dividend by 11 percent and said its board had authorized another $4 billion in buybacks for 2012.
Disney raised its quarterly dividend by 20 percent while Viacom spent $700 million buying back shares in the December quarter alone.
Cable networks like Disney's ESPN, Viacom's MTV, News Corp's FX and Time Warner's TNT make money from advertising sales and carriage fees that they charge cable, satellite and phone distributors.
The media companies reported carriage fee revenue growth of 8 to 12 percent, and while there are some doubts that advertising sales growth can be sustained, S&P's Amobi argued the climate was not as bad as feared.
"There are still question marks on advertising but nothing earth shattering," said Amobi.
And there is one more reason why media conglomerates might feel confident even if cable networks' strong performance starts to soften: The Albanian Army.
The reference is one famously used last year by Time Warner Chief Executive Jeff Bewkes to disparage online video service Netflix Inc's impact on his suite of premium cable channels like HBO.
But Bewkes and other media bosses have changed their tune and now welcome the 'new money' from Netflix, Amazon.com Inc and others who want to launch online video services with their extensive library of TV shows and movies.
News Corp President Chase Carey said the company received $200 million in the first half of its current fiscal year from Netflix and Amazon. Viacom announced a new deal with Amazon on Wednesday.
Analysts said with library content deals like these a majority of the cash goes straight to the bottomline, since there are no new costs involved in creating the content.

Though all the companies have performed strongly with shares up between 5 and 10 percent since the start of the year, there are still opportunities for growth, analysts said.
News Corp is seen as a better bet than its peers because it is still valued slightly below its rivals on an enterprise value to earnings basis. It trades just over 7 times estimated earnings, according to analysts at Collins Stewart. The average for most of its peers is just over 8 times.
"We like News Corp; it has the fastest growth over the next 12 months and the lowest multiples," said Collins Stewart analyst Thomas Eagan.
Time Warner, which forecast a better-than-expected profit outlook, is seen as having less upside in the short to medium term by analysts but they welcomed its investment in new original shows at networks.
"Time Warner's cranking along well; they have momentum in ratings and ad revenue and they continue to invest well in programming," said Miller Tabak analyst David Joyce.
On Wednesday, Time Warner shares closed up 1 cent at $38.11, while Viacom added 57 cents at $49.37. Disney edged up 29 cents to $41.27, and News Corp rose 12 cents to $19.62.

The horrible part about this is that the alternating wood grain was done on purpose. The top ring and the third ring have a light color. They are set in a book matching grain position sandwiching the darker second ring.

I thought about the 3/8 gouge and started to try that. With my setup I just cannot seem to get my eyes, arms and tool in a position to see where I am cutting. I am definitely not in the category of Hollow Vessel turner. So, what I tried was using my Easy Wood round cutter, extremely lightly. It sort of works. It goes along, progress is made, the cutting is nearly finished, and pooommm out comes a chip or two. The fresh cutter on the tool is just plain not sharp enough.
Stephen, I held up the very sharp tool 3/8 bowl gouge. However, I did not even turn the lathe on. If I could see in there or had some HF experience that would probably work. I have had a lathe for some time, however, with developing a shop, being on several Boards and still practicing, I just have not spent much time on a lathe. I am totally retired now. I am not on any Boards, I cancelled my license so I cannot go back again. Hopefully that means that I have a lot more shop time. I will try stiffening up the fibers.
Carol, As you noted above the cross grain was done on purpose. I love walnut. However, I now find out that it is not the best wood for amateur turning.
Mike, The bowl is basically a cylinder that will look like it is floating. The sides are straight inside and out. There is no taper/slope to allow me to see the turning tool tip unless I get my eyeballs slightly past the mid-line of the lathe. At that point I start having trouble banging into the dust collecting system. I could remove the DC, however it would be a pain to do. I also start getting into my own light somewhat.
I do have a very delicate touch. I mean, after all, if I am going to use a sophisticated Dremel Tool to grind a rust ring off of the front of an eye (the cornea), I better have a delicate touch.
Jim, I will try the mineral oil first. If that does not work I will try the CA.
I tell some patients (the, I never heard of this condition, the very complicated condition, etc. patients). "If every patient was easy, I would die of boredom." It is the patients that make you hit the books, talk to other docs, etc. that make life interesting for a doc. So I am going to play like this piece of walnut is an unusual patient. Of course the walls to the bowl will keep getting thinner as I learn. The bowl may end up like "The Bridge to Nowhere." Only in this case it would be "The Bowl That Holds Nothing."

FDA approves Roche skin cancer drug Erivedge ? Health & Fitness ...
NEW YORK ? Federal regulators on Monday approved a pill that treats the most common type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma.
The pill is called Erivedge and is made by Genentech, a unit of Swiss drug maker Roche. Erivedge is intended to treat locally advanced cancer for patients who are not candidates for surgery or radiation, and for patients whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body. The capsule is taken once per day.
Genentech said Erivedge is the first drug approved to treat advanced basal cell carcinoma. It said the drug will be available within one to two weeks.
The drug?s label will warn that it is linked to fetal death and severe birth defects when it is used by pregnant women. The most common side effects of Erivedge include muscle spasms, hair loss, weight loss, diarrhea, fatigue, changes or loss in sense of taste, decreased appetite, constipation and vomiting.
Curis Inc. of Lexington, Mass., which collaborated with Genentech on the drug, is getting a $10 million payment from Genentech now that the drug has been approved.
The approval comes ahead of schedule, as the Food and Drug Administration previously said it would make a decision on Erivedge by March 8. The drug was given a fast six-month review because there are no approved treatments for basal cell carcinoma.

Top senators agree on tough penalties on Iran (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Determined to weaken Iran economically, a top Senate Democrat and Republican on Monday unveiled a bill to impose sweeping new penalties on Tehran and thwart its nuclear ambitions.
Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson, D-S.D., and Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, the panel's top Republican, said they had agreed on the measure that would target Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, require companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchange to disclose any Iran-related business to the Securities and Exchange Commission, and expand penalties for energy and uranium mining joint ventures with Tehran.
The bill also would deny visas and freeze assets on individuals and companies that supply Iran with technology that could be used to crack down on its citizens, such as tear gas, rubber bullets and surveillance equipment.
Johnson and Shelby said their committee would consider the legislation on Thursday.
"A nuclear-armed Iran would represent a grave threat to regional peace and international security," Johnson said in a joint statement with Shelby. "Iran's continuing defiance of its international legal obligations and refusal to come clean on its nuclear program underscore the need to further isolate Iran and its leaders."
Shelby said the bill "sends a clear signal through strong measures that Iran must abandon its nuclear weapons program and its designs for the spread of international terror."
A report in November suggested that some of the Islamic Republic's alleged experiments could have no other purpose than developing nuclear weapons. Iran contends that its program is designed to generate electricity, not build weapons. A U.N. inspection team currently is in the country.
Both the Obama administration and the international community have imposed tough sanctions on Iran. Johnson and Shelby said those penalties have been insufficient in deterring Tehran from pursuing a nuclear weapon.
Among the provisions of the legislation is an expansion of U.S. sanctions to include companies involved in joint energy ventures anywhere in the world in which Tehran is a significant partner or investor. The penalties also would apply if Iran receives energy technology or information that wasn't previously available to the government.
Penalties also would be imposed on companies involved in a joint venture with Iran in the mining, production or transportation of uranium. Individuals who agree to abandon such projects within six months would be exempt from the penalties.
The legislation would require the president to identify and designate officials, affiliates and agents of the Revolutionary Guard Corps. These individuals would be subject to sanctions and barred from the United States. Individuals or companies that engage in transactions with the Revolutionary Guard Corps, even through bartering, also would be subject to sanctions.
Penalties also would be mandatory for shippers or insurers who knowingly aid the shipment of materials that contribute to Iran's weapons of mass destruction or terrorism-related activities.
The bill is likely to garner strong bipartisan support. Last year, the Senate voted 100-0 for a measure sponsored by Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., to the annual defense bill that targeted financial institutions that do business with Iran's Central Bank. President Barack Obama signed the wide-ranging defense bill on Dec. 31.
